Stuff Christians Like - Jon Acuff : Skipping church. (The definitive rules.)

If you've decided to skip church the night before (late night, sleep-deprived) but then you wake up naturally with plenty of time to get everyone going, don't skip. If you wake up late, and everyone's whining and they can't find their church shoes, don't skip. (My girls always manage to find them, as I tell them "I guess you'll just have to wear your Nikes to church, then"---somehow the church shoes magically appear) If you are sick of church, don't like "what's going on lately, " are thinking of changing churches, definitely don't skip. If you don't mind going to hell, then it's OK to skip. jk

Stuff Christians Like - Jon Acuff : Worrying about the little things.

Wait til you read the book! Yes, the blog is great, and entertaining, and many times, deep. But the book will blow you away--- You will laugh until you cry, (and you will cry legitimate crying too)_--- the book is a tour de force.

True---- it's a commandment, but it is a NEW TESTAMENT commandment. It is the one that sums up all the law, in a New Testament comtext, so it is complete grace rather than OT "Law."

Stuff Christians Like - Jon Acuff : One more reason to love Carlos Whittaker.

Right. Read the Bible: For instance, Philippians 4:8 "... whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; ...... think on these things." And no, of course there is no one who constantly "thinks on these things," but as Christian parents desiring to raise Christian children, shouldn't we at least try to control the influences we allow? in our own car? isn't there a standard? For 3 year olds? And although none of us can ever reach the ideal, are we not supposed to try? Can I not state my opinion on a Christian blog without getting sarcastically flamed? And to further comment on your remark, "being in the world and not of it" was exactly the point I was trying to make.

Not crying at all. I am just constantly amazed at parents who truly desire to raise godly children, who don't consider the influence of the toxic culture we live in, which includes songs like this.

So true! John Piper's book "A Hunger for God" is stunningly true and fresh. I highly recommend it for anyone going through a dry spell, and it speaks perfectly to this underutilized gift, fasting. He calls fasting "the hungry handmaid of faith" and it's so apt. Thanks for your comment.

The Church of No People : Doubt Month: The Problem of Evil

I think the "Why does God allow evil?" is just a red herring. I think it's really just the best that the non-believer can come up with, to defend against Christianity. The real truth is that people want sovereignty over their lives, and don't want to give up a shred of it, and if they learn about Christianity they have to admit that they are not God. People don't want to relinquish control. You wrote: "Really, why is it on God to solve my every problem?" To me, it really is up to God to solve my every problem. I'm not sure I'd frame it this way to the non-believer, but God must do it, because I'm so limited and incapable. And he is limitless and all powerful. And I'm grateful to call on him. Great post. Glad to visit your blog.
