GazetteOnline.com : Inaugural 'On Iowa' podcast

Hey Marc college football live is doing a What if... series right now (such as what if there was no BCS and what if Rich Rodriguez had gone to Alabama instead of staying at West Virginia) and I was wondering if in your next podcast you could do some Iowa football what if's. I don't have many in mind but what if kirk ferentz had never become Iowa's football coach who was on the list and where are they now.

Hey marc is Demarco Paine not coming back to Iowa? Also love this class could be the future at linebacker, tight end and a tandem of running backs in Coker and D'Andre Johnson.

Is it just me or does Ballard look like he has the Julius Peppers and Jason Taylor body type to be an NFL DE? Speed isn't the issue with him he ran track in high school and by the looks of the picture in this article he looks more like a running back than a DT no body fat at all.

Marc have you heard anything about Cedric Everson, will he be at Iowa next year? Also Fiedorowicz will be in the rotation for sure, the upside and potential for him is through the roof. A few years with Doyle and he will be a stud, as long as he gets that all the great tight ends in college and the pros also block and don't just catch passes. If he dedicates himself to blocking and models himself after Reisner and Moeki the next few years for Iowa at tight end will be taken care of.

GazetteOnline.com : Orange Bowl final -- A look ahead to 2010

Good point and I shouldn't say that Iowa doesn't good recruits Bulaga, Richardson and Doering were all pretty highly thought of in high school. But Reisner is a perfect example of the fact that recruting services, for all of their hype can't predict what type of work ethic a kid will have and how they will react to adversity.

Totally agree on the line, that's Iowa's formula for sucess get pressure on the QB with the front 4 so the linebackers can drop and the DB's cover their zone. This defense works great when they have the guys to do it, the frustration comes when the line is inexperienced ala King, Kroul, Mattison and Iwebema their first two years and it is not a coincidence those were the years the Hawks struggled to a poor record. Then the negativity started with Parker, ie his unwillingness to Blitz.. I used to hate the way Parker forced his players into his system rather than adopting to their strength's but that's why he's an Orange Bowl winning defensive coordinator and needless to say I'm not. I was curious Mark I have a hard time as an Iowa fan dealing with the fact that 5 star linemen stud's like Sentrel Henderson don't seem to be more interested in Iowa if Ferentz and Morgan and really Dolye can turn guys like Gallery and Yanda into NFL players and take solid prospects like Bulaga and Richardson and get them on the field as freshmen imagine what they could do with a guy like him?

2010 Hawks Reisner = Best Blocking Tight End in Iowa's history DJK and McNutt = Potential to be the Best receiving duo in Ferentz's tenure at Iowa D line = Best D-line since the Roth- Babenieux line

Hey marc what is the possiblity of Wienke getting any action in the game? Is it a situation where even if Vandenberg is 9 for 27 and struggling that he stays in there the entire game or would wienke be given a shot even though he hasn't thrown a pass yet?

Bottom line it is a great position to be in, and while the three that we will have next year won't be the quality of USC's running backs there is similarities with their situation this year. And if 04' and this year taught us at Iowa you can never have enough running backs. The big question is, what will happen with Brinson? Marc did a great piece earlier in the season about his potenial he is the most likely to transfer but I hope not.

Marc how big of a difference is there between safety and cornerback? Is Conklin better than Lowe or is it just fact that he is more tailored to cornerbak and has not had the time to adjust to the different scheme's and calls? Because Lowe has been on the field more this year starting during the UNI game.

GazetteOnline.com : Two still aboard Iowa RB train

I don't agree with the "If it ain't broke don't fix it" line, Iowa hasn't played up to their potenial this year I would go with Robinson 2 out of every three possesions but have Wheger on 3rd downs as a pass catching option. If there is 12 possesions in a game instead of 6 and 6 between the two backs Robinson would get 8 and Wheger 4 not a huge dramatic difference. Simply because it isn't broke doesn't mean you can't do a little maintenance on it to improve production.

That's a good point Marc, Stoops does still have that Iowa mentailty. I would just love to see what Chris Doyle and all the other coaches could do with year in and year out talent like the powerhouses of college football. You've seen what they have done when they do get exceptional talent like a dace richardson and Bulaga both were starters as freshmen. And by the way have you seen Allen Reisner, being from CR and seeing him when he went to Marion and seeing him now with Iowa it is scary what Doyle can do.

The real question is could other coaches and staff's across the country ge the same amount out of the players Iowa has as the Iowa coaching staff. I would argue the Iowa coaching staff could go to Oklahoma and Florida and USC and do exactly the same things as Stoops and Carroll and Meyer. Where as I don't think the reverse is true, no way does Stoops and company take Iowa's year in and year out talent and get the same productivity as the Iowa coaching staff.

I've got to say even if Wheger is completly healthy I think its time for Iowa to start having Robinson taking 2 out of every three possesions as the Iowa back. With that said any time it is 3rd and 6 or longer I would bring in Wheger as the back, he has proven he has the abilty to catch and Robinson while solid seems to be more of a liabilty. Eventually I think next year with the return of a healthy hampton, wheger who has proven he has good hands is going to be moved out to receiver anyways sort of like a wes welker type. Iowa next year can't have a rotation of 3 backs, not enough carries.
