GazetteOnline.com : Cougill 'didn't get my full effort in' at Iowa

Thanks for the update...I guess Brennan was far too optimistic on his prognostication.

GazetteOnline.com : On basketball . . .

HawkiJedi, You can speak for yourself, but if you are truly disgusted, hit the road and find another team to support. If Lickliter gets fired, it is because he was going to lose another round of players--so your understanding of the situation is incorrect. Lickliter has the worst 3 year record in Iowa history--he was given ample chance to show more and he failed. The man is good, but he was learning on the job and over matched.

GazetteOnline.com : Nice numbers not doing it for fiery Vandenberg

Losing a Big10 title is tough, but I don't think Stanzi would have had better game than Vandy--that is a stout OSU defense. So we were probably destined to finish 2nd, even if we had won the NW game. The throws I saw Vandy make and the fact he got rid of the ball instead of taking sacks---I thought it was as impressive a performance (given the defense) of any 1st start by an Iowa QB ever. Vandy can make some throws that Stanzi can not make. Stanzi has better running ability. I think we are in excellent shape for next year---2 deep at QB (both having experience) is great luxury as NW game showed. We left 7pts on the table (Stross endzone drop and Murray chip shot miss)...our defense didn't play as well as I had hoped. We had Vandy, Robinson, McNutt, and DJK step up huge for us, but not enough help from others. It was good run this season---wait until next year is familiar line, but we do have a shot at a great run next year and maybe we can finish the season next year if we avoid the key injuries.

GazetteOnline.com : Last Call -- Northwestern

I don't think going Vanilla against OSU on offense is a bad recipe. If you run the ball 3-times and punt, we'll probably give up some field goals by losing field position, but we will stay in the game. Maybe a special teams play or a defensive score can then win the game. The thing KOK does with a new QB, is he comes out throwing on 1st down and getting behind the chains...then a INT happens and we get behind the score and then we have to throw the rest of the game. Vandy might put up a good game for us---really hard to predict. He doesn't have much experience and he is going against a great defense, so odds are against him. As far as OSU being the best defense in Big10....we have three Rick-6's this year and then the fumble TD in endzone. That is 28pts on season or about 3ppg per game scored for our opponent by our offense---so the ppg comparison OSU vs Iowa defense is misleading. Add the 15-16 INTs Iowa QBs have thrown and our defense has had a lot of fires to put out.

GazetteOnline.com : Born into this

It was very difficult situation to just throw him out there....It is way to early to assess what type of QB Vandy will be at College level--so some of the negative evaluations I've seen on the Hawkeye sites are over the top. He has a good arm. The throw off his back leg across the field to DJK was difficult throw and DJK should have caught it. Vandy missed McNutt for TD--not by much. Also missed that open long ball to DJK. Moeaki dropped one that he was interfered on. If he Vandy had hit McNutt in Endzone, it would be completely different evaluation of his performance. Vandy had pretty good accuracy in High School. I think he'll step it up...winning at OSU is tall order though. Likely the best outcome for this season is 10-2 with a final win vs Minny.

GazetteOnline.com : Partying like 2004

I think the schedule was easier in 2004 and 2002 vs this year. This year, going on the road to At Wisconsin, At MSU, at PSU, and at OSU is pretty tough. 2004 victory over OSU at home was great and magical, but that was the weakest OSU team of any since 2002. Penn State was also way down in both 2002 and 2004. I think the comparisons to 2004 are correct. Tate was better QB than Stanzi., but running game is better now is much, much better than 2004. Both DLs were great, but 2004 was better against run. This DL is overall faster and better at contain. Our CBs this year are better than 2004, and AJ Edds/Anger/Hunter is better coverage linebackers than 2004. I say that mainly because Edds is a pretty unique SAM.

GazetteOnline.com : Last Call -- Arkansas State

I thought Stanzi played well in PSU game, but the receivers dropped a lot of balls. This game, Stanzi was sensational until 2nd half. The throw into coverage where he was fooled, that seems forgiveable. The Pick-6, that is just scary because it was only those type of plays that could let ASU back into the game. He's on pace for 17 INTs this season, so I think ball protection is legitimate concern. He's got to be a little more Jake-like in some sense--i.e. be a better game manager.

Marc, lots of new information--thanks! I hadn't noticed Kuempel being used in the run formation as 2nd TE---I'm going to watch the replay and look for it now. Kuempel in pretty good player in his own right---I though he did good job last year as sub. Unfortunately for his PT, Iowa is pretty well loaded on the OL.

GazetteOnline.com : Last Call -- Penn State

Iowa doesn't get a lot of 4-start talent, but the ones we have gotten lately have panned out quite well. Clayborn was 4-star, Ballard was 4-star, and I think Hunter was 4-star. Angerer had offer from Penn State---i.e. LinebackerU...so he wasn't unheralded. Prater at DB, I think at very least he was high 3-star---he ran pretty fast 40 time and Cornhuskers wanted him badly. Iowa might not care about measuring the 40-times once guys are on campus, but Iowa staff has definitely recruited the fastest defense that I have ever seen at Iowa. Iowa guys test pretty well for 40-times at the NFL combine.

Good writeup. I thought it was Angerer that poked the ball loose from Royster?

GazetteOnline.com : Your Penn State two deeps

I don't think most fans going into this season thought Moeaki would last a full season, so no surprise there. It is amazing though, that we are missing 4-starters on offense (Bulaga, Moeaki, DJK, and Hampton) and seemingly not being hurt too bad. I am big fan of Reisner, so although he is not as athletic as Moeaki, he is more sure handed. The receiver depth this year is unheard of for Iowa, so DJK being out has not hurt much. I still think we miss Hampton as I think he runs harder than either Robinson/Wegher, but those two are doing well. Reiff coming in as RS Freshman and playing OT without hearing his name being called for holds/blown assignments is pretty exciting.
