I live two blocks from where the Tucson shooting happened. I went to the memorial we had on the University campus, where the President spoke. And I will never, never forget how awful and judgemental and holier-than-thou people were about how we were Doing It Wrong. It seriously shocked me how much people totally sucked about it.

Iteration He counts his fingers. No fewer than the previous day, also no more. Enough to plinck from one note to the next without looking. What he does, does not count so much; enough to think of small, simple procedures that can be performed in a single afternoon.

Skinny Dipping Charred branches block the trail, leave marks on the skin in passing. Squeeze by and smudge your ankles. The creek drops off granite blocks and finds slots to sit in, blue pools with tiny wet frogs trilling. Get in the water, let the charcoal soak away, let little hairs on your body dry and leap unstuck in the sun, one by one.

Vigil (2) The procession goes under a bridge like a slow flood; winking lights against the concrete, incense smoke sleeking out of wagging thuribles swung around by skeleton-priests. I have a bell; I ring it every so often, no plan. I wait for a place in the drum beats where it makes sense. On the bridge, on the sidewalks, spectators howl as we pass beneath. Puppets wave at them, and I roll my tongue in a Pancho Villa cheer that bounces off the smoky air, and sound the bell one sharp 'ding' when we emerge.

Modes: Lydian Twisty little passages, all alike like slot canyon walls glowing slickrock heavy, solid earth-time comic eight-pagers trail -- fragments of Jesus tracts, cans of tuna. Follow the thread through knots, brambles picked clean by others comb jellies in the caprock turn you to stone if you look too long.

Makes sense. I haven't seen them all either yet and I am excited! I would probably let you watch my DVDs if you lived near me. Unless you are a serial killer or a zombie or something. :)

After The Equinox The foothills glow with a rich bronze that matches my bicycle bell. The chain squeaks; too much has been happening, I haven't time to take care of things. Mistletoe strangles the trees along the road. There is a harrier kiting on the updraft. The bell rings itself at every bump.

I'm falling behind. It's been a rough week. Vigil (1) Every act of grief has tacky edges: stiff tees silkscreened with old Aunt Trudy's pasty face near enough death to look relieved, or words, meant as uplifting but taken as an early campaign slogan. Kitsch on the gravestone, hamfisted soothing on one hand, blessing the corners of the room while the other hand goes on about how close the fires of Hell are, and there is still time for you.

Zombie Lunes 1. Electric flickers sizzle at the base of my spine. 2. Cheerleader: her legs might fly off if she does cartwheels. 3. Frontal lobe is sweet -- but back brains -- easy to ambush. 4. One day, you notice a death glaze in your neighbor's eye.

Wolf Fifth A wolf fifth lurks in your driving, sun-blare through the window. It zigzags in our smalltalk and you, tonedeaf, you weave past the bus and warble, screech, bump into the garage.

Meat Collective A young cowboy, wrapped in his linen shirt one early May morning draws me to his table with sheep liver. He's got a freezer full of chops sleek and red, grass-fed animals consciousness-raised, sustainably ranched and priced to prove it. He promises thoughtful carnivory; the kind, respectful deaths that I like to imagine humans would give to prey under most circumstances. He explains the share program -- buy part of an animal, then wait for it to grow and be slaughtered. Then drive out to the beautiful grassland ranch, through the golden hills, through the citrus perfume, and return with gleaming, shrinkwrapped steaks, divvied up with kibbutz flair.

The God of Guinea Worms When we eat fig wasps they are just a speckle and the fruit is a ripe universe that dissolves in the belly. But drink from the still pools, and the worms sear a crooked path through you and burst through your skin, as if you were the fig, as if your long legs, your fine feet were just rich meat, a garden for thready parasites.
