I didn't take the coal company subplot as a dig at capitalism. The writers used it to expand the character of Mags Bennett. We were grabbed by what a dangerous enemy Mags was with the poisoning in the first episode. The coal company subplot showed us how smart she was. Mags Bennett,who probably didn't have a high school education,completely outflanked the professional sharpster the coal company sent to Harlan to deal with her. The coal company underestimated her and we were afraid Raylon might too. This kept the suspense level high and kept you sitting on the couch 15 minutes prior to the next episode so you wouldn't miss anything,like you used to do with 24. At least that's how I took it.
