Wonkette : Sundays With The Christianists: Mark Twain Was Really Unfair To Slavery In 'Huckleberry Finn'

Yeah, my daughter should have just stayed with her depressed, drunken, violent husband instead of kicking him to the curb and ending up on food stamps for her 3 kids. She's just such a lazy dependent.

Wonkette : Musicians Dishonor Troops, Make The Baby Jesus Bald Eagle Cry

Every NCO club in Vietnam had a touring Filipino band covering CCR. Seems I remember Proud Mary the most. One of my favorite memories in the vein of "Drive On" was the day we had one of those bands at a company party, and they kept playing - strippers and all - when we took a couple of rockets and we GI's all put our helmets on. Don't think anybody went to the bunkers, though. Entertainment was hard to come by.

The other day I was playing some 60's and early 70's songs for my 31 year old daughter, just to make sure her education was complete. When I got to Fortunate Son and started "singing" It Ain't Me, she said she always thought it was just a happy song about "Jeremy! Jeremy!"

Yeah, my wife gave our daughters unisex toys, I tried assembly or electronics toys. No go. Both daughters went for the pink ponies and Princesses of Power. Once grown up, one is the quintessential mother-of-3-kids-a-dog-and-a-cat and the other one is VP of an international commercial insurance company.

I used to work with a Scot who could have stepped out of the Wayback machine. He would have fit in better as a 15th century border reiver than as a tech worker. I loved seeing the steam come out of his ears when I'd quote Johnson at him "Much may be made of a Scotsman if he be caught young".

I grew up in the 50's. My parents both worked and I generally had the run of the region (present-day Silicon Gulch) when I got out of school. That was when my love of long-distance bicycle riding started. Made it up to Lick Observatory when I was 12. I thought it was the bestest childhood a little vagabond could have.

In the late '70s Heathkit made a PDP-11 clone. I had a fleeting thought to make one and rent out all that processing capability. Then I saw the new whiz-bang North Star Horizon (pre-CP/M) and bought 6 in kit form. A few thousand solder connections I was a full-fledged computer dealer! Fortunately before I could get in too deep and lose my shirt when the tech changed, RCA Communications recruited me for a real job. BTW, a few years ago I ran into the man who wrote the bootstrap code for the original Digital Equipment PDP-11. We were helping haul a horse out of a ditch in Eastern Oregon.

In 1990 my daughter's school had a 2-week exchange with 60 or so Russians including parents. We took a couple on a tour of the University of Washington campus and they were astounded that all those geese could wander all over the grounds and not get eaten. There was so much goose poop I think they had the right idea. So anyway, there's what I can tell Kid Zoom about U Dub.

We used to run a B&B in Eastern Oregon. Most people were fine, but of course the ones who stick in your head are the obnoxious ones. Eugene supplied most of those in the form of self-important sorta-used-to-be-hippies. But then our cat used to be a stray in Eugene, so I guess they're not all bad.

Not actually kidding about the disposition of the truck. If I kick before either you or the truck (I'm 67 so there's hope) I can tell the kids to give it to you if you want. They show no appreciation for the glorious gray epoxy primer paintjob, let alone the comforting rattle and thump of the diesel. 17+ mpg in a 4wd 6200 lb vehicle with an enclosed 4x8 foot cargo area. Pearls before swine, I tells ya.

I guess I lose my libtard accreditation. I've always kinda liked the calm burble of my 86 6.2L diesel Suburban (Bubba). Meditative and reassuringly simple whilst cruising along in the Basin and Range part of Nevada with no services for a zillion miles. Only drive it to the dump these days, but it's probably only about half way through its service life after 28 years and 186k miles. I want to will it to either of my daughters but no takers so far. Maybe I should will it to Dok Zoom down in the metropolis of Boise, who I think saw Bubba when he stopped in town to retrieve Vlad the Impala. Dok?

For me it was the 1953 War of the Worlds green ray zapping people who turned into skeletons that fell to the ground as dust. I saw that movie again a few years ago and that scene still bothered me. Maybe not as much as the horrible acting, though.
