We worked 12 to 16 hours a day in the oppressive heat of summer in Idaho, Eastern Oregon, Nevada and during the monsoon in Arizona, heading south where the grift was invented. Our "money" was kept on the "books" and dolled out to us in very small amounts. Our room and board was deducted from our "pay". They even had us believing that our customers would actually get their products. It was seriously like a cult, everybody getting down on the non-producers. A few experienced ones on the "mag crew" had the silver tongue and could sell anything to anybody, but most struggled to sell two or three subscriptions per day. I remember trying to convince people that our crew was different, and unlike the ones who ripped them off a few months ago, they would most definitely get their magazines. I was 19 and just dealing with the death of my father. I saw an ad in them paper that said "Travel the US and make money! I took the bait and went to the "interview" at a motel in Aberdeen. Guess what? I was just what they were looking for. A lost soul they could pressure to go door to door selling something nobody needs, magazines! They whisked us away from home and tutored us in the spiel then set us loose for no more than a few hours at a time, picking us up and dropping us off in different neighborhoods. Continued.....
