KOMO - Seattle, WA : Drivers skipping 520 Bridge toll could clog I-90 | Local & Regional | Seattle News, Weather, Sports,

From Chicago to Boston - I90 is tolled in lots of places - so, obviously it is do-able. And you can be sure, that if it is do-able, the state is preparing to get it done.

The state could solve this whole "what can we do to avoid the toll" issue by just tolling the I-90 bridge and ALL of 405. Then Kirkland, Bothell, Kenmore, Lake Forrest Park, Tukwila and Renton could toll all of the surface streets on their own "toll avoidance routes," and before too long, it will cost all of us at least a couple of bucks to drive from home to ANYWHERE !!! Sheesh ....

You might want to ask the folks at the east end of I-90 in Boston about tolling a federal highway. The MassPike is not a FREEway.

KOMO - Seattle, WA : Can foreign tourists help US economy? | Business | Seattle News, Weather, Sports, Breaking News | KO

The only place I've traveled recently that required a VISA was Cambodia - and that VISA was purchased for a crisp US $20 at the airport on arrival. We make it impossibly difficult for travelers who have no desire to settle here to come for a visit, and welcome them with a Gestapo like Customs and Immigration experience. Having traveled abroad each of the last thirty or so years, I've never had a bad experience on arrival in a foreign country, but couldn't even count the number of moderately unpleasant encounters with Customs and Immigration officials on return to the USA. There is no more enlightening experience than international travel. It's a shame that more Americans and our government don't appreciate that fact and embrace the concept.

Every time I hear "Six White Boomers," or "Stop the Cavalry" I fondly recall the good old days when KOMO radio was a mix of music and talk with Larry, Keith and Norm getting us through the day. Can't recall the last time the radio was set to AM - but it's probably been over ten years ago.

KOMO - Seattle, WA : Schrammie: Bring back chocolate milk! | Ken Schram | Seattle News, Weather, Sports, Breaking News |

If you had watched any of Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution (which, if I'm not mistaken, aired on KOMO TV) you would recognize how far on the wrong side of this issue you are. As a result of his efforts, the entire LA Unified School District banned all flavored milks from school lunch menus. It may only contribute slightly to a reduction in childhood obesity, but if the elimination of flavored milk helps at all, then, by all means, do it !! By the way, a single eight ounce serving of chocolate milk contains over three teaspoons of sugar, plus emulsifiers and starches (which the body converts to sugars) and none of the benefits attributed recently to the consumption of limited amounts of DARK chocolate.

KOMO - Seattle, WA : Mall giant sues Indiana to tax Amazon.com sales | Business | Seattle News, Weather, Sports, Breaking

Simon simply wants the state to collect the same sales taxes from Amazon that it collects from all of the other merchants doing business in Indiana. Because Amazon clearly has a physical presence in Indiana by virtue of the three distribution warehouses there, they cannot claim the federal "physical presence" exclusion that would exempt them from paying sales taxes to the state of Indiana. It appears that Indiana has had the authority to collect sales taxes from Amazon all along, but simply hasn't been doing so. All the suit is asking is that Amazon be placed on a level playing field - exactly as they are in Washington state. Because Amazon has facilities in this state, they are obligated to collect and pay sales taxes. Same appears to be true in Indiana. Nothing in this suit is about penalties, or gaining financial advantage. It is simply about fairness.

KOMO - Seattle, WA : China Eastern cancels order for Boeing 787s | Boeing | Seattle News, Weather, Sports, Breaking News

And you don't think that the partnerships had anything to do with saving some money ??? I'm guessing it's a lot cheaper to have components manufactured and assembled in the far east, and probably even Italy that it is in Seattle. I doubt that it took much encouragement from the government for Boeing to see the advantage of taking this work offshore.

KOMO - Seattle, WA : Costco refines pitch on Wash. liquor privatization | Local & Regional | Seattle News, Weather, Sport

You're dreaming if you think prices will go down to California levels, or even at all. We have about the highest liquor tax in the US, and that isn't going to change if 1183 passes. All estimates indicate that prices will be pretty much the same as they are now ...unless the new taxes and license fees placed upon the retailers are passed along to consumers. The question is, why wouldn't they be?

"It's about state taxes." Which will not go down if 1183 passes. Those who are looking to 1183 as a pathway to lower liquor prices are simply dreaming. The only thing that will change is that profits will go to Costco shareholders instead of into the State coffers.

KOMO - Seattle, WA : It\'s the shoes: Kent business unveils innovative footwear | Business | Kent News

Continued from above: Having spent a fair bit of time in the attic during a recent major remodel, I keep a 24" x 60" piece of 3/4" plywood at the attic access and simply drag it to wherever I need to stand sit or kneel. It's long enough to span several joists, and, in my opinion, much more practical than snowshoeing around my attic.

While I'd love to give the inventors a pair of thumbs up, the product is simply not practical. First, you have to make your way to the attic - usually involves climbing a ladder and entering through a small opening between two joists. Since this couldn't possibly be done while wearing the shoes, it would be necessary to put the shoes on once in the attic. Given the straps and fastening buckles as described at their website, it doesn't appear that it would be easy to attach and tightly fasten the shoes while balancing on one foot at a time on a 2x4, 6 or 8 in an attic which more than likely isn't tall enough to comfortably stand in. Once buckled in, and walking around an attic, if you were to step in any space between the joists, if your foot didn't come through the ceiling fully, at the very least, you would pop the drywall loose from a few nails or screws, and see the location clearly from the room below.
