Big Hollywood : On Reagan's Birthday, Let's Remember the Gipper's Film Career - Part 1

I saw it a couple decades ago and enjoyed it. As a matter of fact, it was on TCM again in the past few weeks and I DVRed it to watch again, but I haven't gotten to it yet. As I remember it, it was very touching, and the man who played the dying Scotsman was excellent.

I just finally saw "King's Row" last Fall. It was a dark and stunning picture -- pretty ahead of it's time for the topics it covered, at least by inferrence. (Specifically the incest.) Reagan's role was handled VERY well. He was a MUCH better actor than he was given credit for.

Big Hollywood : 'Red Tails' Review: Heroic Saga Sunk by Absurdities

This SUCKS! I wanted to go see the movie and was HOPING that they would not screw it up with some stupid love story (as happened with the otherwise good "Flyboys.") But, nooooooooooooooooooo! I wanted my husband to make this our date movie for my birthday this month, but if they are going to screw up a perfectly good historical action movie with something that unnecessary, I'll wait until it comes on a movie channel later in the year. Bummer.

Big Government : A Time for Choosing: Rick Perry for President

I think that the fact that the three current frontrunners are Mitt, Newt and Crazy Uncle Ronnie (shudder) is a LARGE reason for my current state of depression leading into the Christmas holiday. I LIKE Rick Perry and would VERY much like him to emerge from the pack, but I'm giving up hope. And if it turns out the BE Crazy Uncle Ronnie, I will have to abandon ALL hope. That will make two elections in a row where my favored candidate(s) have been eliminated prematurely in favor of ... well ... CRAP.

Big Hollywood : Product Placement Gone Wild!

I'm also a fan of most of the USA Network shows and have picked up on this a LOT recently. One of the WORST was the recent episode with William Shatner when they threw in a SUPER gratuitous ... (wait for it ....) Autotrader.com plug! (Hah! You non-watchers thought I was going to say Priceline, didn't you?) In their defense though, I always get the idea that the guys on Psych are making fun of the product plugs, even as they perpetrate them. But for the all-time FUNNIEST examples of product placement (and I think possibly the first place I ever heard of that phrase, if I'm remembering correctly after all these years) check out "Return of the Killer Tomatoes." In the "plot", the filmakers have run out of money by the middle of the movie and have to fund the remainder of it with product placement. The results are hysterical!

Big Government : Will Senators Reassert Their Constitutional Authority, or Capitulate to Obama’s Authoritarianism?

eople used to tout Robert KKK Byrd's (my Senator, unfortunately) Constitutional knowledge all the time and I used to refute the idea that he cared ANYTHING for the US Constitution, with ONE exception ... he was keenly aware of, and ready to fight, ANY impingement on the power of the Senate. (Didn't give a damn about the government's impingement on the rights of the CITIZENS, but he would fight tooth-and-nail to keep any other branch from interfering with Senatorial power.) I'll probably never say it again, but I hope that his "spirit" is whispering in the ear of the Senators today.

Big Hollywood : 'Iron Lady' Screenwriter Swears Film Isn't a 'Left Wing Fantasy'

I think you have to take into account that George C. Scott was a KICK-BUTT actor and Patten was a meaty role that an any actor would KILL to portray. And although I only remember seeing it once when I was young, I don't believe I've read anything in the ensuing years to indicate that the writers/researchers didn't get it right. It was true that Patton was a sometimes-genius, many-times reckless bad-arse who didn't mince words and understood that the role of the Army, particularly in war, was to kill people and break things. Did the movie depict anything more than that?

While it took liberties with the book's storyline, it did so with a great deal of charm and likeable actors. Van Heflin was AWESOME as the tortured Athos. And you can't beat the graceful athleticism of Gene Kelly in the sword-fighting sequences. I am a little bit of a film sword fight fan and the initial swordfight with Gene Kelly against Richelieu's guard is on my Top Ten Best. (Also on the list are Danny Kaye's swordfight with Basil Rathbone in "The Court Jester", Westley and Inigo Montoya's swordfight in "The Princess Bride", Jack Sparrow and Will Turner's first encounter in the first POTC, and the made-for-TV version of "The Scarlet Pimpernel" with Anthony Andrews and Ian McKellen's final sword fight [The Pimpernel and Chauvelin].)

Big Hollywood : 'Terra Nova' Review: Go Back In Time to the Dawn of Lame Clichés

I recorded the pilot but haven't watched it yet, and the ONLY reason I am even giving it a shot is due to Stephen Lang. And the reason I love Stephen Lang is because of Gods and Generals. I am just hoping that the hackneyed attempts to shove every bit of backstory into the pilot via dialogue (as so many shows seem to do, to the point where it is awkward, painful and unnatural) is finished, and maybe it will improve going forward. I hope so for Mr. Lang's sake!

Sorry -- this might be all well and good, but I'm too much a fan of Chris Sarandon and the late, great Roddy McDowell to want to see it. Particularly when this is the second review I've read that invokes the name "Russell Brand" in describing the updated Peter Vincent's style. I can't STAND him and really don't want to see Roddy McDowell's memory desecrated that way.
