You're much more likely to encounter one than a bear if you're out walking in wild areas and around sheds/barns etc. But they have never seen one in their yard and have only heard a couple of reports of others encountering them there . We've acclimated to keeping our thermostat very low but we're noticing that some of the cost savings is eaten up by the water heater having to work harder. It's in an enclosed area with a lot of pipes so it's not feasible to insulate. We're planning to replace it with one of those tankless water heaters but have been waiting for some of the better tax breaks that are rumored to be coming since the front end costs are quite a bit more than the old style heaters... and this one still does the job.
