GazetteOnline.com : The Contingency -- Running back

I disagree. Now, you are right, he got better as the O-line got better, but who wouldn't?? But when a back averages 7.1 YPC in the Orange Bowl and during the rest of the season still average 4.0, you can't say he doesn't have an advantage. Now, of course Robinson DID have the bigger stats and seemed to be the more dominant back, but something about Wegher just screams Iowa football. He is like the Tyler Sash of the offense. Seems quiet, about the same size (which is not big), but makes big plays and ends up making everyone love them. I think he will have improved by the start of the season and should be able to do great things this year.

GazetteOnline.com : The contingency -- Quarterback

Yeah Marc is absolutely right. @hawkiirock He wasn't saying Vandenberg could be the Hawks starting quarterback if he outplayed Stanzi in the fall. He was simply saying, if Stanzi needs sideline time, Vandenberg is definitely the man. LAST year everyone had questions about him. Now that he has experience, he knows what he can and can't do. He will have one more year of spring and fall practices under him and the coaches know his strengths and weaknesses. He should definitely be able to help the team when he's needed.

GazetteOnline.com : The Contingency -- Offensive line

1st: I like what you are saying about Orne. I'll say it again, he was a monster in high school. He still has records here at the high school in Fairfield and if you look back at the athletes here, he is one of the most well known. He was a solid tight end and D-end and had speed. He was a MONSTER on the basketball court which can only help him in football. I hope he gets some action this year. 2nd: I'm surprised at Reiff in this video. I have watched many interviews with him and he goes into shock most of the time and says two words to each question. He actually gave you some information this video! Great work again, Marc.

GazetteOnline.com : Ferentz top 10 -- The Last Call

Okay, in response to that: This series was about the best games Iowa has played. In this game, one of the 5 most coveted bowl games in NCAA football, Iowa played one of their best overall football games of the season, if not the best. We didn't just play solid defense against, statistically, the 2nd best rushing offense in the nation, we embarrassed them. Watch game highlights, and you will realize that Georgia Tech, seriously, had absolutely no where to run. Heck, at one point Dwyer started running backwards 10 yards to get somewhere (which almost cost him 2 points). Great performance by the offense and just made 2010 look brighter than it already was as freshman Wegher ran in a 30 yard TD to seal the game. The countdown was great. Loved every part. But I was also surprised you didn't put this game in there.

GazetteOnline.com : Readers' No. 1 -- 2005 Capital One Bowl

I remember thinking "Drew Tate and/or Kirk Ferentz are going to lose their job for not calling a time out. I was 11 and was very into football at the time and was screaming at the TV. There were about 20 people at my neighbor's house watching the game all together (as our neighborhood usually does when Iowa goes to a bowl game) and I remember the place going from screaming to call a timeout, to screaming and crying because we won. 5 years later, still the best college football game I have seen beginning to finish. I remember after the game, Drew Tate had his helmet on for a long time, and then hearing a commentator say, "I'm on the sideline here and there is just so much emotion. For all of you who can't see, Drew Tate has his helmet on because he is crying. It's just incredible down here." I have watched YouTube videos of the end more than any other game.

GazetteOnline.com : Top 10 games of the Ferentz era -- Let's hear your picks

If there was one moment I could point out in my life where I changed from maybe being a Hawkeye fan, maybe a Cyclone (since my dad is an ISU grad), it was Capitol One Bowl against LSU. That was the first time in my life I had cried over a game. It happened again Penn State '08 and Michigan State last year (mainly I think because I realized we could have screwed our undefeated season). Those are 3 great games there.

Oh! I see! Yes, I was talking about Myers hahaha. No I love your interviews. You ask great questions and get people thinking. Myers, on the other hand, just confused everybody. Except Stanzi, who handled it perfectly. So no hard feelings! Great reporting! The first three places I check on the internet when I get on are Adam Rittenberg's blog on ESPN, BHGP, and your blog.... in no specific order :P

Ricky Stanzi has amazed me yet again. He is truely America's quarterback. I don't know if I have ever seen someone so good in interviews (including the Orange Bowl interview question that should never have been asked, yet making the answer part of Stanzi legend), non disrespectful, had so much fun with the kids from Camp Courageous, and on top of that, he made every Hawkeye fan adore him, come 4th quarter, where he went 10-0 in games he started and finished last season. If you can find a Quarterback, or for that matter, a player that has a better resumè than that, I would be impressed because if this video of him gets spread around, I think, come football season, Stanzi will have more than just Iowa fans following him.

Yeah Iowa didn't own any part of that game, besides owning a lot of luck. If you think about it, without that kickoff return TD after going down by double digits, it could have been an ugly game. That's not taking anything away from the amazing job that Vandenburg did in leading the offense against a great defense. That was one of the only disappointing performances by our defense the whole year, yet we almost pulled it off.... (damn you, 26 year-old former professional soccer playing Ohio State kicker).

GazetteOnline.com : Great topic: Iowa-Penn State finale?

And rivalries have to start somewhere. When a team (Iowa) that goes into a game unranked and plays a team (Penn State) two consecutive seasons in a row when they are ranked 3rd and 5th in the nation, and win, THAT'S when a rivalry starts. A rivalry isn't a rivalry if the teams don't absolutely hate eachother, and each year, Iowa and Penn State hate eachother more and more. This is possibly the start of a great rivalry in college football.

Right now, Penn State. It gives the Big Ten the national exposure/ spotlight with both teams being top 25 by the end of the season almost every year. Not to mention Iowa knocked Penn State out of National Title contention in '08. If the games are late in the season every year, it will be an EXTREMELY fun game to watch. Ohio State doesn't have a big rivalry with Iowa, Penn State, OR Wisconsin... the 3 other teams that regularly contend for the BT title. That's what makes the Penn St.-Iowa rivalry so good is that it will normally determine the 2nd place team (unfortunately 1st is reserved for Ohio State). The Wisconsin rivalry is great, but Penn State will get more National attention and would be more exciting for the fan bases.

GazetteOnline.com : That No. 2 tight end

Hey Marc, I know tight end and offensive line are big concerns for the Hawks, but... should they really be that big? Especially tight end. I can't name one team in college football that uses their tight ends more than Iowa. And I personally think our tight ends right now are at, at the least, average college level. Probably even higher. I just think everyone is getting worried because it's not HAWKEYE level. I don't think this is really a position to worry too much about, especially with Reisner who I think could do some extreme damage, such as Moeaki did, with more reps and opprotunities. But I'm interested to see your point of view. Should the Hawks REALLY be worried about who is going to be 2nd tight end while some teams only have an average STARTING tight end?
