I liked this episode. I wasn't really interested in the Equestria Games, and it was really nice to see Spike step up once again. I really hope they continue this trend, as the only negative aspect for me in regards to the show has always been how Spike is treated. Hopefully the writers will make Spike be a little more badass and not take two steps back next season, so to speak. I mean, even though he's young, it's getting a little tiresome watching him be a scaredy cat with no confidence all the time when he can swim in lava and breath fire strong enough to melt an iceberg the size of an office building in seconds. For me, the episodes have been getting better and better since "Bats!" Great humor in this one, and A.J.'s "WTF?" face at the beginning made me laugh out loud. My only critique would be that it seems like the writers are having a hard time with Pinkie Pie. They seem to be walking a fine line with her, and she was in danger of becoming a caricature of herself in this episode. I think she came close to the line, but didn't actually cross it. The show's basis has always been about social interactions, and when a title like "Princess" as we understand it is attained, those are generally the first things that change. However, it they do focus on that, then they do change the core of the show. I think it's a bit of a no-win situation. I've never been a fan of Twilight being a princess now, and I have to admit, I've had a bit of a hard time really getting into the first 6 episodes or so, just because they don't seem to be addressing it. However, I will say that I do like the fact that the outside populace is treating her like a normal pony, as much as it doesn't make sense to me. I think "the West Wing" ruined me when it comes to the social relationships between leaders and the populace. He has natural abilities that the others around him lack, regardless if they are normal for a dragon. Look at a lot of alien characters in comics. Many times they are "normal" for their race, but are considered to have "powers" because they are considered to have unique abilities compared to those they associate with. Spike being a dragon to me is no different. Dragons have a power set, and he is a dragon, therefore he would be considered to have powers. As I said though, I agree with you about the Spike abuse. It's one of the only things that has ever irked me about the show. Bruce Springsteen's "Out in the Street" I thought would go over well ponified, and Phil Collins has 2 songs that now completely make me think of MLP, specifically the relationship between Celestia and Luna. "Against All Odds" always reminds of Celestia's feelings towards Luna after her banishment, and "No Way Out" seems tailor-made for Luna. So, something along those lines.
