Speaking of TV channels, do you remember when SpeedVision (existed) used to show something other than NASCAR and when the History channel showed history, not aliens and duck hunting beard competitors?

This. I have frequently lamented the fact that my 1.4Ghz laptop with 1GB of RAM can't browse the web anymore. I'm all for progress and new fancy shiny video games and better graphics, but why does your Web2.0-enabled PHP-laden, CSS-ridden, horribly coded and leaky JavaScript hell hole of a website need a dual core processor and 14 TB of memory to view? Learn efficiency, people!

Atomic Toasters : High Tech Clothing

IIRC from his book, Mallory wore mostly wool, silk, and other natural fiber clothing. I love the style of those old climbers. The pictures from the book make them look like they're just out for a stroll in the country in their khakis and wool hats.

I work in academia. You get laughed at if you're wearing something nicer than jeans and a t shirt. Actually, now that I think of it, if you are wearing a nice t shirt and nice jeans you get laughed at. If it doesn't have bleach stains/holes, burn marks, and unidentifiable food/chemical/biohazardous material stains on it, it is too nice for lab. In fact, when people come to the lab to interview for postdoctoral research positions they often show up in a suit. And they get made fun of for it. To their face.

Atomic Toasters : Shutdown: Steaming in the Snow

They have one of these at Leonard's Mills outside of Orono, Maine. My wife's grandparents are quite active with the group and I got to spend some time checking it out a couple of years ago. They have a guy there who is basically rebuilding the thing from the ground up. They also have some old lumber mills and other similar logging tech. Pretty cool old stuff. I would highly recommend a visit if you're ever in the area. Edit: More Info: http://www.leonardsmills.com/lombard.html

Atomic Toasters : User Input: Re-Creational Drinking

I just read up on it. Apparently the master blender from W&M did actually taste it. A tiny amount. He also smelled it. For someone who really knows what they're doing, it is definitely possible to get very close to the original from a sniff and a taste. Certainly things like color, viscosity, sugar content, etc are helpful, but yeah, even the best chemical analyses can't compete with the experience of a master blender.

Atomic Toasters : User Input: Re-Creational Drinking

It strikes me mostly as a gimmick. The argument that it is old therefore somehow special is silly. Once a liquor is put in glass it essentially is done changing. With very little exception, whatever goes into the bottle in 1898 will taste the same in 1899 or in 1999. Unless there is something particularly special about what goes into the bottle (was it a particularly good batch or a special distillate of some sort?) its age in the glass doesn't really interest me. I'm quite curious how they can make a 'duplicate' spirit, though. Other than testing things like alcohol content, residual sugar, etc, there isn't a good way of measuring flavor. There are too many compounds involved in the perception of taste to be able to quantify effectively. Not to mention, even if you had them all quantified, how are you going to reproduce them? Scotch comes from barley, which is malted, then fermented. The sugars in the grain, the strain of yeast, the temperature of fermentation, all play a role in the final product, not to mention the barrel aging. All that said, $160 isn't honestly THAT much for a good bottle of Scotch. If it gets good reviews I'd consider buying it.

Atomic Toasters : Sometimes Free Stuff Isn't Worth It

Ah, but sometimes it is worth it. I got my table saw for free from CL. Yep, it works. It's ugly and needed a bit of cleanup when I got it, but I have used it a fair amount and it is still kicking. It even had a fairly new blade on it.

Yeah, it is actually pretty good. Doesn't really taste very much of maple, just a hint. And it isn't like a maple liquor which I have), it is an 86 proof spirit that just happens to be made from maple syrup... which occurs to me almost makes it a rum, but not quite.

I'm damn close to heading to bed. Yes, it is only 10:45 PM. Don't care. Probably need to get up in the next 4 hours to feed the baby anyway. But I figured I should wish all you hooligans a happy new year before I sack out. I forgot to take a picture of the drinks I've been imbibing tonight. It started with a cab sav, moved on to american wheat whiskey, from there to an irish whisky, and finished on a shot of Vermont-made Maple Vodka. Yeah, it's been a weird drinking evening.
