Mark Watches : Mark Watches 'Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood': Episode 14

Then I felt bad that I had made a reply to a weeks old comment without knowing whether someone had already come to you about this ... But I also worried that another non-binary person might back-read these posts and come across this and be hurt like I was, Don't feel bad. Your reasons are clear enough. I talked about this to a friend who wasn't online a while ago, and found out that what I said was really wrong. I also have to take responsibility for what I put on public domain and how it affects others. And at the time, I didn't know that a friend of mine preferred the "they" pronoun, and I felt really bad talking about this to them and other people reading that stupid comment of mine might also feel hurt, especially if it remains unchallenged. Then if it is unchallenged, it looks as if everyone agrees with the statement. Yeah, it is painful to be reminded of something I did that hurt others at this time, but admitting I am wrong is nothing compared to another person denying who you are. I've had that done to me about my ethnic and sexuality, and I cannot believe that I made someone else feel that way. >.< I have argued with others that you can just accept that you say something ignorant and hurtful without being defensive about it. Either way, even if it was by accident, you stepped on someone's foot. And well, I was caught stepping on other people's feet, and I should accept that I did that, apologize, and change it. I feel more relieved now, and hope that any non-binary person who sees your post will feel better, and anyone else who sees my post will see that you can be ignorant, no matter what your intentions, but feeling "bad" about it is nothing compared to what you make another group of people feel by denying who they are. So please don't feel bad. That post needed to be challenged, and I needed to be challenged weeks ago.

I actually was reprimanded about this weeks ago, and had it put into perspective. Also realized that I was doing the exact thing I hated and saying what pronoun a person should feel comfortable with and individual rights should be respected. I am sorry, I really am not in the right mind at a time in my life. I had two deaths this year in the family and waiting for a third. I am not using that as excuse because that had nothing to do with what I said on this community. It's just that at the moment, I am kind of worn thin. I don't want to ignore this post because I understand what you mean. However, I just don't want to think about that on top of everything else at the moment. When I saw this reply, it was just like seeing that one reminder of that stupid ignorant thing you did in high school that you wish you could forget (or travel back in time and slap yourself). I'm sorry if I made you feel bad with my ignorant statement. If it means anything, I take your side completely against my comment.

I really hope there isn’t some secretive, awful reason why Ling is around because he’s so entertaining. Whelp. Characters with their eyes always closed usually are keeping secrets and playing the loveable fool, or they really are loveable fools. I now am always suspicious of anime characters with their eyes closed, as they tend to have something they are hiding from the other characters (or are actually oblivious to everything and the joke isn't that they are hiding the truth from others but that the truth is always hidden from their eyes.) Ling Yao Appearance: loveable foreigner who mooches of short alchemists Really: Xingese Prince searching for a legendary stone Secret Motives: ???
I admit, at first I read the post that way and it was very hard to see other interpretations when I was upset. However, I did the best thing, I finished a stressful commission, waited, read it again, and mulled it over. It would have been less stressful to ask what sporkganza93 meant. Now I feel like hiding for a few days.

I was actually trying to keep it vague enough, and at the same time hint that religion is complicated and multifaceted. I didn't even mention sexuality because even now there are many dissecting opinions between different faiths, different churches, and between different people in the same church. I am actually not too happy with my dissection because I can only get at the bare bones of the bible and the seven deadly sins, and the only reason I know that much is because of Fullmetal Alchemist and my need to research every and all things of a fictional world. I guess you could add more, but I wouldn't even know where to start to disagree. I only had discussions with my one religious professor, who is also a Catholic Priest, and the only reason we could get any far in the topic is because I had the reference material right in front of me. And the only reason I can go in depth is because I recognize the root of philosophy and psychology in religion. So sorry, XD I am a poor devil's advocate.

I do hope my first reaction is mistaken and that was what fcbexntnamn93 was referencing. I cannot speak for the community as I am cis; however, I have a dear friend who is gender fluid, and I do not want people telling hir what pronouns ze should feel comfortable with, constantly questioning are you "male" or "female," or "What are you?" "They" is another one that is so impersonal, as if you are telling the person, "You are a mysterious vague maybe singular or plural subject, but I will not acknowledge your individual identity." If sporkaganza93 was referring to [Spoilers] Rail'f zbafgebhf sbez pbzcbfrq bs n gubhfnaq fbhyf, then it was a really unfortunate misunderstanding that I wish didn't happen. And I am at least sorry for interpreting it that way.

And you know what..., I'm out. This is a prickly situation. English is binary. The more recent pronouns "ze," "hir", etc... are not even part of our regularly vocabulary and are not even used when translating pronouns that do no have a gender. We have only just recently included singular gender neutral pronouns, and I have seen them used by no one except people who don't identify as male or female. It is especially difficult when the original language doesn't just evade the issue of gender, it specifically includes people who fall outside the gender binary. For Envy, "they" ought to suit you just fine. "They" does not really suit my just fine. It may suit you just fine, but I think it is a poor choice. It is a simple way of manipulating the language to evade the issue of gender. I can find fault with it as I like because I do see a problem with it. Heck, if it didn't suit me that Ed is spelled with one "d" instead of two, it's nobody else place to tell me that it ought. *leaves*

Still, knowing where that term comes from now, I don't want to use it either. I never did know what it meant and just read it in a few books, which were probably written from one certain point of view. Maybe they didn't know what it meant either, and used it the same way I did, to sound scholarly. Totally understand the feelings too, as I used to get prickly when certain parts of fandom called a character, "Arabian." I felt like yelling, "'Arabian' is a horse!" I actually have many issues that I am prickly about. To be honest, I am attracted to this blog because the people are considerate of others. I grew tired of people on the internet making excuses for saying offensive things and not owning up to it, or not recognizing that it is problematic. Everyone has much to learn. I am cool with how you replied and would have done the same thing:

One thing: There is no such thing as "Judeo-Christian beliefs." That's a term made up by Christians to pretend they're being inclusive when actually they neither know nor care what Jews believe, and I find the term highly appropriative of my heritage and somewhat offensive. I did not know that. Sorry for using that word. I cannot edit it once the comment has been replied to but maybe one of the admins could help me out. I will definitely not use that word anymore. Question: the engravings on the door are Jewish, right, not Christian? Also sorry to steal some of your arguments, but you probably found a lot more imagery than I did. Now just seemed like the right time, as I experienced a lot of intense emotions and fangasm watching the villains gather together. I mostly just researched the imagery and motifs after watching FMA.

But Armstrong sparkles and explodes his clothes off in every fight scene. He must be a sparklepire and fur-sploding werewolf hybrid that is obviously superior to either Jacob or Edward.

Greed: Fuck Yeah Greed! The ultimate shield. I was forced to watch "Wallstreet" in school, and I did like it. Remember the speech, "Greed is good," that is discussed in almost every philosophy class. A person can make the argument that Greed is good, and can make the argument that Greed is bad. Greed i the desire to hoard and possess. Oddly, Greed does not seem to possess much, but what he does express is the intense desire for eternal life, the ultimate form of Greed. It is virtuous to be able to give of oneself. Greed's power is to guard his body, but it does not lend any aide to his friends. Alternatively, Greed puts a lot of value on life but can only value them as it relates to himself. Greed has the power to protect. One who is greedy with friendships want to protect them, however, he lacks the ability to extend his power and truly protect anyone that isn't himself. An embodiment of greed, he doesn't just want to keep meaningless trinkets, he wants to acquire and guard what is important to him. Unir V snvyrq gb zragvba Terrqyvat, naq ubj njrfbzr ur vf? Wrath: [2003 spoilers] V cersre Jengu va Oebgureubbq orggre. However, the evolutionary purpose of Wrath is to destroy obstacles in the way of our goal. His ability, the Ultimate Eye, is able to pinpoint obstacles and allows him to destroy them. His anger is quite pinpoint and intimidating. Wrath with a purpose and a goal has the ability to plow over obstacles. It is ingenious that he is pinned against Greed. Wrath is the desire to destroy others possessions and relationships. Nyfb Jengu jnf perngrq sebz Sngure'f shel nsgre Terrq ena bhg ba uvz. He is not a mindless embodiment of fury. He is destruction and wrathful purpose. He is the train on the tracks that will destroy anything on its path. Sloth: Poor guy. Sloth is sometimes referred to as the greatest sin because it destroys what can never be retrieved, Time. We only see this big hulk for a second. He doesn't look too enthused, but Lust gleefully relates that Father keeps him busy. Poor guy. Imagine wanting to just lay on the couch in your sweats and somebody just forcing you to help in a vague plot that involves sacrifice and subterfuge. Pride: [MAJOR SPOILERS!!] Fryvz Oenqyrl vf n ubzhaphyhf. *flails* The concept of sin and evil is very rooted in Judo-Christian mythology. The homunculus are not cackling villains. Lust doesn't want to bang everything. Greed doesn't just want random possessions. Wrath isn't throwing tantrums. Envy does not show being jealous. Sloth is made to work. And Gluttony....still eats everything, but he also has a innocent and ignorant nature that doesn't lead to have malicious intent but just results in malicious actions because he cannot comprehend anyone's desires but his. Oddly, I usually am not the type to adore villains. I appreciate well written antagonist. However, FMA: Brotherhood is one of the few pieces of media where the villains manage to amuse me as characters as well as antagonists to our heroes. [Note] I usually write essays on whim. I know some people pre-write their responses, and I should do that. Dx I just felt compelled this time. Maybe I will prepare more throough essays on the sins that are less last minute responses. Can anyone else tell I have been waiting for an opportunity to delve into the villains's characters? And just to see if I have this gif thing down yet: I'm out.

Arakawa did her research well. A lot of the philosophy and details of the Fullmetal Alchemist World are based on Western theories of Alchemy, be ng yrnfg gur nypurzl sebz Nzrfgevf vf . You can spot a lot of Judo-Christian imagery, like the engravings on the door of truth and the formulas for the transmutation circles. I admit, I was one of those types of fans who went to the library immediately after watching FMA and checked out every reference book on Alchemy that I could. The basic transmutation circle with the simple array in the center is based off the Grecian theory of the four elements and four states: Water-Cold-Earth-Dry-Fire-Hot-Air-Wet. However, you can really tell that the homunculi were written from outside the Christian perspective. The seven deadly sins are a pretty common motif in the Christian World; philosophers like Augustine viewed them as entirely negative aspects of human nature, sins of the body. That view is very black and white (Not that Western Philosophy is black and white, as some philosophers, like Aristotle, emphasized a balance of virtues. Let's just say that Philosophy is pretty subjective). The black and white views of sin is often portrayed that way in the media..., and it can be pretty uncreative and analytical. For instance, a character that embodies Lust will want to have sex a lot, but we have noticed that Lust doesn't seem to seek carnal pleasure. She is not that simplified, but she still embodies Lust perfectly (other than evoking lust in many viewers). Lust: The sin of lust is the sine of desire. In Christianity, sex is not a sin (Or it's not that simple). It is the creation and bonding of two bodies. The reason that lust is a sin is that it treats the body as a object to be used and discarded rather than a temple for the soul. I cannot imagine Lust, with her contempt for humanity, wanting any sort of companionship with a human. However, she is all to eager to use humanity as she pleases. She takes pleasure in it even. She offered Cornello false promises of something divine, but discarded him with little thought as soon as he could no longer served a purpose for her. In addition to this, she is clever and patient. Her power is to pierce any substance, besides being obviously phallic, it is very symbolic of the power lust has to destroy another body. AN: I am not a Christian, and I am sorry if I got some facts wrong. I am just interested in the philosophies and the many ways it can be interpreted. Gluttony: I never gave much thought to Gluttony, but he is complex as well. Gluttony is perhaps the first sin we experience, it is the desire to indulge beyond necessity. It is as simple and as innocent of a desire as a baby demanding a bottle, and Gluttony is as simple and innocent as well. However, we learn to control this desire. Gluttony is terrifying because he is the desire to devour unrestrained. It isn't even a malicious desire, it is just a selfish desire that is just of all but one's own wants. Envy: Oh boy Envy. Actually, Envy is quite charming. (Note: Why can't the English language have gender-neutral pronouns? ;___;) Envy is a malicious form of jealousy. This sin is pretty obvious and is part of one of the Ten Commandments, "Thou shall not covet." This is a very petty sin that leads to malicious feelings because one desires an object that another has. Loving thy neighbor is difficult when one isn't happy for their fellow humans' accomplishments, and only desire to take what rightfully does not belong to them. It is, to me, a complex sin, and I have experienced it on many occasions. In excess, it is harmful to oneself and relationships. Envy's power is obvious. Envy can transform into anyone but does not seem particularly fond of the people they are transforming into. Envy has a default form we see often, which is very androgynous and described as "cute." Greed here mentions a "true form" and calls Envy "ugly" which is the first time we see Envy mad. Oddly, Envy has not expressed much jealousy yet. V jnag gb qryir shegure vagb Rail'f punenpgre, ohg V srry gur fubj bayl fpengpurq gur fhesnpr, naq vf guhf sne whfg qebccvat yvggyr uvagf.
