Salvo Magazine: Science, Sex, Society : Salvo Magazine - American Nightmare by Karen Swallow Prior

Really thoughtful piece, Karen. Chicken that I am, I could never watch anything even half this scary without having insomnia for the rest of my life. :-) But I appreciate your analysis.

Big Hollywood : BH Interview: 'Twilight' Audio Book Narrator Ilyana Kadushin - The Saga's Unsung Star

Yes, good old sex-and-violence-free paranormal adventures about an abusive stalker. I have nothing against Ms. Kadushin; she sounds like a nice and talented person. But I'm afraid that if she thinks these books are just good clean fun, she's mistaken. There are some pretty damaging ideas in them.

We should never talk about any topic that a certain segment of voters might not like? That's going to narrow down the range of permissible topics pretty considerably. (And since the Reagan comparison has come up, seems to me that he too had quite a few things to say about sex-related issues.)

Thanks for the nice comment, shelibells! Glad you liked the article and that you enjoy music! I would recommend that any aspiring reviewer read two books: "The Portable Dorothy Parker," and "Broadway Babies Say Goodnight" by Mark Steyn. Parker, though her politics were way out there, was a genius at reviewing; Steyn is a genius at just about everything. The two of them taught me to write with honesty and enthusiasm and to keep it down to earth. (I might also throw C. S. Lewis's "An Experiment in Criticism" in there. It's a more difficult read, but you can learn a lot from it about criticism and the arts in general.) One more tip: If you don't like what you're reviewing, don't be afraid to say so -- but never sneer at the artist or at the audience. A work of art may be worthy of contempt, but human beings deserve respect. Then just write as much as you can and submit as much as you can to as many publications as you can (always being careful to follow their publishing guidelines). Best wishes!

Pop-country she may be, but the "tart" part is hardly fair in this case. If you ask me, when you look at how most young pop starlets act today, a girl ought to get a little credit for not flashing everything she owns for the whole world to see.

They were all legends, and deservedly so. But they could hardly go on singing forever; no human being could. And an art form that lives solely in the past is an art form that's dead and decaying. Just because, say, the Victorians wrote great novels, we wouldn't say that no one should ever write a novel again. :-)
