Big Peace : Ron Paul Panders to Anti-Semitism in Michigan

So what exactly does the flyer say? Ben Shapiro says it specifically mentions Israel but NONE of the news sources reporting on this say that. In fact, no where is there a translation of the Arabic side. Much like forgetting to mention that it was a local coordinator who actually wrote and distributed the flyer, I suspect Shapiro also mistakenly conflated the details of the article, which tangentially mention Israel, with what it actually says. Of course, while some here screech about PaulBots, Shapiro himself is out of his mind when it comes to Ron Paul. Notice the subtlety in his article. He doesn't provide a translation of the flyer, or the English side of it, but then brings in discussion of Paul's book -- which has nothing to do with the flyer -- to make it seem as if the two are related. This is very reminiscent of what the media does to conservative and libertarians. Too bad it's now passing for journalism at the Bigs. If there's one thing Mr. Shapiro has, it's a single-minded purpose of Israel first, Israel always. I'm sorry, Israel needs to lose its foreign aid support, right along with everyone else. Just as Ron Paul says. Now will Mr. Shapiro post a translation of the flyer to show the bias he says is there? I doubt it, because I doubt it exists. Rich

Big Journalism : Media Hit Fails: Tea Party Backs Outed Gay Sheriff

Well, there's liberals for you. Not only is the Phoenix New Times not backing away from their horrendous reporting but they're doubling down on it: http://www.phoenixnewtimes.com/2012-03-01/news/ba... Because Babeu did what any guy does when trying to get a date online -- post pictures of himself -- the rag is calling it a "scandal" and trying to link his actions with those of Anthony Weiner. Babeu had a great comeback, though, and noted that unlike Weiner he was not married. I'd also point out he wasn't taking pictures of himself in taxpayer financed Congressional gyms either. The liberal mindset really is getting scarier and scarier.
Big Government : Governor Luis Fortuño Predicts Puerto Rico Will Become 51st State

While a 51st state would really screw up the symmetry of the flag's stars, there's no reason Puerto Rico shouldn't be a state. It's a beautiful island and although they report their gas prices in dollars per liter (that really had me going there when I went to fill up my gas tank the first time...I thought "Wow! Gas is a bargain here!") for all intents and purposes it's already a state. May as well make it official. Rich

<Sigh> This is what's wrong with the Republican party. I just don't get it. I just don't see why people are choosing this man. Romney is just such a squishy Republican, seriously it's obvious it's time for a new Republican party. It simply does not represent me. John McCain last time. Romney now. WTF?! Looks like I'll be voting for Gary Johnson come November. Rich

Big Government : Friday Night Document Dump Show Eric Holder Was Informed of Border Agent's Death Immediately

I think the critiques of Boehner here are very appropriate. Whatever you might say about Pelosi -- and there's quite a lot to say -- she never missed an opportunity to pounce on the Bush administration when she was speaker. Even when there weren't lives at stake and she was just making stuff up, she was still on the attack. She was a fairly effective speaker for the liberal cause. Boehner needs to do something, anything! Oh, I'm sorry, he cries a lot. He's good at that. Rich

Big Government : Incoming Chief of Staff Jack Lew's Past Statements Coming Under Fire

Excuse me, I'm no "lefty dog" but even I've seen the Bigs site refer to PolitiFact as PolitiHack time and again. So let's not suddenly pretend it's a worthwhile "Pulitizer Prize winning" organization because it suddenly says something we like. Here its analysis is labeled "subjective" when it question the MacIver Institute: http://bigjournalism.com/bhealy/2011/12/20/macive... Here it's called a "hammer" to beat Republican candidates: http://bigjournalism.com/jjmnolte/2011/10/17/who-... Here's it's teaming up with NPR: http://bigjournalism.com/jjmnolte/2011/11/03/what... So there you go, 3 minutes worth of checking that PolitiFact and its Truth-o-Meter is regularly denigrated around here. Again, conservatives need to stop adopting the tactics of the liberals and use whatever means necessary to achieve an end. If PolitiFact is a hack site, then don't go citing it because it comes out with a nugget we like. We can't have it both ways. Rich

Let's see, a bad shade of Obama (Romney), a religious zealot (Santorum), a Democrat turned Republican who can't quite get his politics right (Perry), or Mr. Consistency Ron Paul, and you choose to attack him for bringing a solider on stage who supports him? Yah, right! I pick Santorum to fade after New Hampshire or South Carolina (he's got, what, 4% support nationally?) and then it will be a choice between a blow-dried candidate who passes and defends the very thing Republicans have committed to doing away with (Obamneycare) and the one candidate who has never wavered in his principles. Please, give me Ron Paul any day of the week to any of these other loser candidates. Rich

Big Journalism : This is What Totalitarianism Looks Like, and CNN Seemed Rather Dazzled by It All

Okay, that was just bizarre. But notice how where the mourners are standing, they're all standing. And where they're kneeling and pounding the pavement, they're all kneeling and pounding the pavement. Genuine grief would certainly have mixed the outward displays of emotion amongst the two groups. But if you look at the 0:17 mark, the male in the middle seems to look at the camera and then goes into his grief display. Now, yes, it could be genuine grief, but only because they've been conditioned to operate in such a way. But I doubt it. Rich

Geez, I don't know...I agree that sometimes violence against the government IS necessary. Those in power don't give up that power easily. What I see being argued here in these comments though is violence against people as opposed to the government. I agree, violence against individuals such as that perpetrated by the OWS crowd is reprehensible. But that's not what Nolte's article was commenting on. He was trying to draw some kind of parallel between the sentiments of violence against the government and there being something wrong with the movement. While there's undoubtedly something clearly amiss in the heads of OWS protestors, lets not be selective in how we like to portray things. If Tea Parties had been selectively singled out here for believing in an uprising against the government, the comments would be different. The fact is, the tree of liberty must be replenished with the blood of tyrants from time to time. Just because you don't like the politics of the OWS crowd doesn't make the sentiment any less true. Rich

Big Government : Thursday Open Thread: Congress Edition

They were definitely a more honorable group than those who currently #Occupy the chamber, but it also didn't take very long for avarice to overtake the body. Just look at all the "insider trading" that was going on by the time the Transcontinental Railroad was being built. Buying up land along potential rail routes -- and payoffs and handwringing to ensure they went that way -- was rampant. Plenty of members of Congress used their positions to make a profit on the Civil War too. I'm guessing that just about anywhere we look where the government becomes more involved -- whether today or back then -- corruption follows. It's the nature of government, power, and man. Rich

Sorry, Patrick, you're wrong. "No entity—government or corporation—should be in a position to threaten free enterprise or property rights. It is altogether appropriate for elected leaders to ask questions." Google is not threatening anything other than hypocritical conservatives who want to use the government to enforce their values. We might not like what Google does, we might oppose its politics, but that doesn't mean we should step in and use the government to force competition. It exists, but most people like what Google does...and probably have no clue about its politics. The government should leave Google alone. I try to use services other than what Google offers, but when it comes down to it, it does what it does very well and THAT'S why it's so successful. Rich

Big Government : Liberal Senator Sherrod Brown's Wife Caught in Political Activity while on Duty for Newspaper

I'm not sure I understand the hullabaloo either. Why does everyone get so upset at people videotaping their speaking engagements? I get the whole ethics thing behind this supposed journalist doing campaign work for her husband, but it's more like the outrage is over the videotaping itself. I'd expect the Left to get exercised over the Right taping their comments, but I'm left scratching my head when the Right throws people out for doing it. I think we play into the Left's hands -- we legitimize their actions -- when we do the same thing. Essentially, if you're saying something in public that you don't want to be held accountable for, you probably shouldn't be saying it in the first place. Moreover, if you're saying stuff to simply pander to the crowd you're in front of, you don't belong in office at all. Yes, this woman was doing her husband's campaign work on the newspaper's dime, and it's a sad commentary about the LSM when we actually expect this sort of effort, but it's really a lot of sound and fury about nothing.
Big Government : The Cheat Sheet: Tuesday

L4S, you keep making my points for me. Thank you. "You're in the wrong place if you want to justify what Hoffa said, regardless of his actual meaning. " So it doesn't matter what he said or meant, you'll twist it to your own ends. That's idiotic. But apparently you do need a lecture about truth because it's quite obvious it's a foreign concept to you. Lying to combat their lies doesn't equate to "truth." And though my dues may have been supporting many Democratic candidates against my wishes, I challenge anyone to live a purist life. Are you using a Microsoft computer? Nearly three-quarters of its campaign contributions went to support Obama's election. Did YOU help get Obama elected? Using a Mac instead? 100% of Steve Jobs $254,000 in contributions went to elect Democrats. Did you Google something recently? We all know Sergey's in Obama's back pocket. Facebook's Zuckerberg too. Got a profile there? Did you pay for a movie ticket to see a Disney flick or one by DreamWorks? They contributed heavily to Obama's campaign. Great job supporting free enterprise, L4S. Yet even News Corp., the friggin' parent of Fox News, contributed almost $74,000 to Obama. So you tell me who's supporting whom. The fact is, your willingness to use underhanded tactics to fight underhanded tactics discredits you. It is far better for the overall cause to be upright about what your saying because, like you, you'll be discredited in the end if you don't. Rich

Having been a union member for my entire career, I'm keenly aware of the tactics they employ. No, I'm hardly naive. Rather, what's showing is your ignorance that you think the ends justify the means. That's a fool's game to play, and a losing hand at that.
I'm sorry, but viewing the unedited clip of his speech, Hoffa is clearly talking about voting. However horrendous the labor union industry has been to this country, conservatives and libertarians would be outraged if (when!) the liberal media carved up a video to make it seem a conservative/libertarian speaker was saying something he wasn't. What Hoffa says is, "And you know what? Everybody here’s got to vote. If we go back, and we keep the eye on the prize, let’s take these son of a bitches out and give America back to an America where we belong." We can rightly argue that unions are destroying our manufacturing industries, but let's not devolve into the Left's tactics of accusing people of doing something they're not.
Big Government : Google Caught with Hand in Cookie Jar

Sounds to me like some people are allowing their dislike of Google to mess with their defense of free markets. Its politics are atrocious, but am I reading conservative/libertarian posters here reacting gleefully to the fact that the government stepped in and shut them down? Would everyone be so cheerful if it was the Koch brothers, or John Mackey of Whole Foods, or some other free market supporting individual? Doubtful. In fact, the comments box would be filled with (proper) outrage at government overreach. Sorry, but those who think the government is right in this instance are just sorely mistaken. All too often we see complaints about how the FDA puts huge, expensive obstacles in front of pharmaceuticals. Many times it's not even based on good science. So people who are willing to accept the risk associated with buying their drugs from Canadian sources -- my god, people, it's not like it's coming from Malaysia or some other backwater country -- are now prevented from doing so. And we're cheering this? That's just retarded. Sorry, Capitol Confidential, I don't agree with your stance. Rich

Big Government : Air Force ‘Raid’ on Las Vegas Gun Shop Not as Sinister as Reported

Hmmm. I'm not convinced yet. The language Mr. Angley cites specifically addresses "audits and investigations." Do raids on private businesses fall under "investigations?" Using the expansive language Mr. Angley chooses, they do, but I'm not so sure that really passes muster. There's a big difference between conducting an investigation and leading an enforcement action. Moreover, citing regulatory authority as justification for powers under the law is a little specious, even if it makes it "valid," since we all know regulators tend to assume power not intended by or truly authorized by the law itself. Regardless of where the law really lays in this instance, I'm still leery of the military acting out any raids whatsoever on private individuals and enterprise. Rich
