If it’s taking us at our word, I’m surprised they are so keen for us to extend.

Who said anything about changing the whole structure?

Neither you nor I know for sure if the EU is working on the assumption we’re willing to walk away; pre-Johnson, I’m fairly sure they weren’t, now that might have changed. If you’re right, then there isn’t a deal to be done.......time will tell.

I find it curious that talk of extending never seems to include an assessment of whether the probability of achieving our objective is high or medium to low. If it was the former then there might be a case, subject to T&Cs, but if it’s the latter then it’s a waste of time, effort, money and opportunity.

Point taken.

Your key word is ‘mutual’; if at all possible, they want us to be a ‘non-member member’ (ie, following their rules but having no say, which they would see as optimum). I suspect we will have to walk away before they relent. If they think we’re serious, they may change their views, but it’s not a definite.

Er, no, they don’t want an FTA plus (eg, an improved ‘Canada’ deal) if they can possibly avoid it; UvdL said she wants an ‘ambitious’ deal (which seems to be EU code for being tied down to their rules and regs). My instinct is we could get an FTA plus, but we would have to play hardball and be prepared to walk away.

The difference would be he didn’t volunteer to ask for an extension in October, it was forced on him, and people in general understood that. Actually asking for an extension would be a very different kettle of fish (forgive the pun!).

Time will tell which of us is right but Johnson has expended a lot of capital on no extension, so it would put him in an extremely invidious and difficult position.

Bearing in mind what’s been said by both sides in recent weeks, logically it doesn’t seem likely any substantive talks will get off the ground. I see today Macron is insisting on ‘dynamic alignment’ sine die, which is a non-starter.

There is virtually zero chance of Johnson extending, as the T&Cs will include further payments crossing the channel, among other things. Don’t see it myself.

Everyone seems to think fishing is all or nothing but taking back control simply means that, we decide who and what quotas. I would guess EU boats will get access, but with a loss of between 30-50% of the present quotas.

I can’t see much scope for an overall trade deal with the EU, this year or next. For the last month or so, we’ve been given a diet of what we must agree to / cannot do, post-Brexit, by every Tom, Dick and Harry connected with the EU. The vast majority runs totally counter to our thinking; how do you square the circle?
