When we read something like a complex sentence, rather than reading the entire sentence as a single unit of meaning, we 'chunk' it into smaller units which are easier for our brain to process. but sometimes when we encounter ambiguity, like in "fruit flies like a banana", we unconsciously apply our own expectations to the sentence, and then when the sentence fails to comply with those expectations, our notion of meaning falls apart, we have to go back and give it a second interpretation. So sentences with ambiguous meaning take much longer in semantic processing than other unambiguous complex sentences. this kind of stuff is really only interesting to about a dozen psycholinguists hidden away in the cornres of various universities.
