As an agent in the Leavenworth and Lake Wenatchee area, we have known these changes were coming for years. These increases would have occurred under a McCain presidency too. The law bases the lease rates on the appraised value of the land. On Lake Wenatchee a waterfront lot on the North Shore sells between $500,000 and $700,000. Private owners have been underpaying for years and it's naive to pretend as if they had fee simple ownership when clearly they did not. The Seattle Times had a front page article on the same topic and explored it with much more depth.
