South Shields is the birthplace of John Simpson Kirkpatrick - known as 'Simpson - the Man with the Donkey' at Gallipoli because he used a donkey to ferry wounded soldiers to safety. I was surfing the internet for information about 'Simpson' when I cam across a blog from ' 'Dumbledoresarmy' concerning an ancestor who (like Simpson) was in the Army Medical Corp. and kept a diary.
