Boston Sports Media Watch - Daily links from the Boston Newspapers about the Red Sox, Patriots, Celt : BSMW Enemies List - Edition 1

While Joe Sullivan is certainly culpable for destroying what was once an informative and enjoyable sports section, I'd have to also mention his superiors, who have a perverse impulse to put Shaughnessy on the FRONT PAGE of the newspaper, with his full little caricature, byline in 20-point type and generally presenting Shanks bilious and trite observations in a manner more fitting coverage of the lunar landing or a special contribution from a famous author. Ted Kennedy himself didn't get the fawning treatment that Globe honchos lavish on their balding carrottop. I cannot stand stand Shank -- as it well documented in BSMW -- but sometimes the kid throwing a tantrum isn't the only one at fault. The parents get some blame, too.

Boston Sports Media Watch - Daily links from the Boston Newspapers about the Red Sox, Patriots, Celt : Losers All Around In Globe Article

Waiting for the other shoe to drop. This will be a doozy that will make Baghdad Bob weep in envy (if he was still with us,) Bruce has it right in the sights: Larry Lucchino is at this moment huddled with Dan Shaughnessy working on the ultimate smear campaign against Theo, to be unleashed the second it is officially announced that Epstein is moving to the Cubs.

Boston Sports Media Watch - Daily links from the Boston Newspapers about the Red Sox, Patriots, Celt : Sports Media Musings: The Big O losings O's

Excellent points by LTD. Ryan, a couple of questions: -- why only Ordway? Is the D&C show still the revenue generator it was? I assume that Mutt and Merloni don't make a lot and that Mike Adams is paying Entercom to let him be on the air, but D&C pull down big bucks, are two fat deals in a single slot, and have sharply declining ratings (which must affect revenue eventually). -- you identify Ordway as "a program director." I have heard him many times say that's no longer one of his responsibilities and solely Jason Wolff's.

Solid reporter. Very readable. No self-promotion. Never uses her feelings as a litmus test of what a player's value is. I can't imagine her doing anything so childish as the "16-0 but lose in the playoffs" stunt. She obviously didn't get the memo. Approve.

Boston Sports Media Watch - Daily links from the Boston Newspapers about the Red Sox, Patriots, Celt : Review (and Giveaway) of Fenway Park: The Centennial

Business first: please enter me in the giveaway contest. My favorite non-baseball memory of Fenway is one that's seldom mentioned. I'm not even sure of the year, but I think it was in the middle '70s. There was a "Harmony" concert that featured a number of acts, but what I recall most was Stevie Wonder performing, his stage built over the pitcher's mound. I think it was around the Hotter than July LP, but who knows? Anyone else remember that?

Boston Sports Media Watch - Daily links from the Boston Newspapers about the Red Sox, Patriots, Celt : 2011 Approval Ratings - Steve Burton

Good husband. Good father. Good brother. Good sport. THere's a lot of good in Steve Burton, but what he's missing is "Good at his job." He gets all distracted then excited about shiny objects. You get the sense that many of the new items he reads don't entirely make sense to him and that he's less than lightning-fast in live interview situations. His innate ability to confuse comments with questions ("Great game. Eh?") is clearly a gift from God, but not a god you'd want ruling the universe. I'm sure that Burton would be an ideal next door neighbor who would happily lend you his tools, but other than being handsome and affable, he's bringing no added value to the sports events he covers. He's a very lucky man, and I think he knows it.

Boston Sports Media Watch - Daily links from the Boston Newspapers about the Red Sox, Patriots, Celt : An Open Letter To Glenn Ordway

I see a delicate problem where if Bruce Allen went on EEI to discuss his assertion (a correct one, I believe) that by devoting extraordinary air time to the Barstool photo mess that EEI/Ordway merely were as sensational in its own way as Portnoy was, then he could be accused as just extending that chain. Apologies for the run-on-sentence, but as good as it might be to witness an Allen-Ordway debate, it would inevitably just be more churning of the Barstool controversy, and that's precisely what Bruce is decrying.

I thought it was nicely argued, Bruce, but let's look at the impact. You may simply be calling attention to an insignificant tantrum that would otherwise disappear of its own irrelevance, as I believe the latest ratings numbers show that BSMW and your other outlets have a larger audience than The Big Show. Anecdotal evidence is that they come from a demographic with more disposable income, too. (Compare the replacement cost of a windshield, which is zero, to the high-end toy purchases discussed on the threads.) In other words: why bother? Although I'm happy that you did.

Rich could win an "approve" simply by being the alternative to the Fastidious Fatty and the Sneer-Do-Well, but he brings a humorous, lively touch to the morning almost every show. Since morning drive is (by my definition) a time to try to pull together a positive attitude for the work day, this is a welcome talent. Like others, I appreciate his self-presentation of someone who likes sports, respects the power they hold over this market, and is not stupid enough to pretend he can compete with the experts in the audience. Plus, no golf talk.

Boston Sports Media Watch - Daily links from the Boston Newspapers about the Red Sox, Patriots, Celt : Guest Column: Why Bud Selig is the worst Commissioner in Sports OR How to make MLB better.

Regarding Rule #6 (speeding up the game). I agree that the endless idiocy of putting in three different pitchers for four batters in a 6-2 game in the seventh inning must cease (I'm looking at you, Genius Joe) but don't forget the main culprit: advertisers. Keep track of how many time broadcast games come out of break to a 0-1 or 1-0 count -- or even to pa play in progress. That's the broadcast outlet trying to squeeze that extra spot in for cash. It's even more annoying when it ISN'T for cash directly. Watch the FOX game to see how many of those offending spots are for upcoming FOX broadcasts.

Boston Sports Media Watch - Daily links from the Boston Newspapers about the Red Sox, Patriots, Celt : 2011 Approval Ratings - Gary Tanguay

I'd love to have an actual count between Tanguay and Stearns as to which one uses that "throw it out there" trope the most. It seems that Tangy uses it to precede idiotic statements ("I'm just throwing it out there, but what if the Pats COULD sign Peyton Manning? How do you balance playing time between him and Tom Brady?") while Butchie uses it to sound a retreat when he's been exposed as saying something inane ("OK, so maybe it doesn't make a whole lot of sense to trade Bucholz for Carlos Pena. I'm just throwin' it out there!"). Your thoughts?

Boston Sports Media Watch - Daily links from the Boston Newspapers about the Red Sox, Patriots, Celt : 2011 Approval Ratings - Gary Tanguay

Did you ever love a band and made their music an integral part of your life? I know a lot of people who feel that way about the Beatles, the Stones, the Doors, Bruce, Nirvana and well, the list is as wide as you want it to be. But then you're somewhere and one of your favorite songs comes on and some jorts-clad sand-pounder comes right over and starts explaining -- loudly and incorrectly -- in your ear what makes that song so perfect. "It's DEFINITELY Billy Wyman's drumming!" he'll shout, and then tell you that he was the first one to play them when he was the overnight dj at some college you've never heard of. That's Gary Tanguay, except his forte is sports. It's not that he knows nothing; he knows just enough to think he knows everything. Like Ted Baxter in L.L. Bean, he's somehow convinced that his authoritative baritone immediately commands respect. He's an authority because ... well ... he sounds like he should be. At least that's what people have told him (or, more likely, all he's ever heard) in his life. I give a hearty DISAPPROVE! but unlike those votes made on Borges or Masserotti, I give this one with a little bit of compassion, because I think Gary's never going to know that his fly is open, and will never believe that a voice like his doesn't immediately earn attention and agreement. He'd make a lovely PA announcer for a some junior college team or maybe even a decent booth announcer for the local news outlet in Muskrat Falls, but he is under a severe delusion that he has something important to say, that he knows sports more deeply and intelligently that anyone, and that people respect him. None of that is true.

One of the most important developments is one that is often ignored in these discussions: that "respectable" or mainstream media regularly use the blind attribution of "reports are ..." or "sources say..." to rip and read the more sensationalistic Twitter/blogosphere nonsense and get it on their radio and TV screechfests.
