Note that Alabama revised its marital statutes in the early 1960s to allow county probate judges to refuse to marry mixed-race couples if their anti-miscegenation law was ever overturned.

No surprise at all that Kentucky was also one of the states impacted by Loving v Virginia.

Pretty much a guarantee that the owners are traditional Southern Baptists or a related variant like Free Will Baptists. Hopefully the adverse publicity puts them out of business even if the couple doesn't sue for the civil rights violation.

If Stormont forms a government it will only be if there's pro-equality, pro-Irish language & pro-choice legislation as part of the agreement, otherwise Sinn Fein won't allow it.

It's sort of a backwards way to go about it but it works, although I'm not clear why Westminster didn't do it earlier since NI hasn't had a government for 2 years.

It's basically a done deal. The trick is that Sinn Fein won't agree to a reorganized Stormont unless there's pro-equality, pro-Irish language & pro-choice legislation.

A few years ago the Orthodox church had enough advance notice of the gay rights march that they were able to organize 20,000 rabid Christians in Tblisi to try to stone to death the gay activists. Fortunately some very brave cops rescued the activists before they were killed. Many of the rioters were just ordinary church goers, not per se members of right wing extremist groups. http://americablog.com/2013/05/priests-led-violen...

And note that the Georgian government knows who the leaders and many of the perpetrators were but has done nothing to apprehend or charge them: http://www.nytimes.com/2013/05/20/world/europe/ge...

It's good that the court recognized that other federal circuits do understand that it is sex discrimination, but that he couldn't rule for the plaintiffs due to an adverse 8th circuit precedent. This is ripe for an en banc appeal to the 8th Circuit COA.

The easiest way to understand this case is that it's sex-based discrimination in the exact same way that a prohibition on mixed-race couples is race-based discrimination.

Kyrgyzstan is the top of my list for a violent reaction comparable to what happened in the Republic of Georgia a few years ago. While the Russian Orthodox are a minority in Kyrgyzstan they're insanely homophobic, and I don't see the rather corrupt Muslim-dominant government intervening to stop any anti-LGBT violence.

Herbert supported the bill to ban the practice but it didn't pass, so "regulating" it out of existence is a good interim strategy since it's not supported by any medical organization.

I must say that Herbert has evolved a lot given his record as a really dumb bigot who opposed basic civil rights for LGBT folks.

The outcome will be the same after the OR court reviews the case for anti-religious bias. The dumb bigots will still lose.

Actually "no cure" is just a common legal phrase which in this context means that there is no remedial action which the defendants can perform to fix their violations of the agreement. While the double entendre could be intentional I rather doubt it is.

This is very good to see. The defendants have effectively been banned from running any kind of business in NJ.
