Awesome, this is super helpful! People have mostly just been doom and gloom about how awful the housing is, which I know but not helpful at all.

If you happen to be going to Boston or NYC I'd be happy to return the favor with advice :)

All those sound amazing, thanks so much! Definitely bookmarking all those links below! I'm planning on looking in the sunset, it's close to where I'll be in school and the "cheapness" is enticing. Any other housing advice? My plan is to come out about 3 weeks before school and go to all the places on Craigslist looking for a room.

I love walking/hiking, food, cafes, museums, bookstores. Good places to escape to, especially outside. Thank you!

Hi Toasties! I was planning on delurking later in the summer to get advice on this but I'm moving it up. I'm moving to San Francisco in August for grad school and I'd love some advice on fun things to do! I'm expecting that I'll be pretty sad and lonely for a while since I'm leaving a great life and friends on the east coast so in particular I'd love suggestions about good places to go and explore alone so I can keep myself distracted as I adjust. Or general thoughts about San Francisco would be awesome. Thanks!

The only book I remember being told I couldn't read by my parents was A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. I have no memory of why but I definitely read other inappropriate things my parents didn't police.

My aunt on the other hand once gave me a book with 3 sentences scribbled out because she thought they were bad and my mother thought it was the height of ridiculousness. (It was the book Love From Your Friend, Hannah. Did anyone else read those books? They were amazing!)

My 6th grade teacher gave me that book as a reward for memorizing the entirety of the midnight ride of Paul revere. She said that her niece had recompense it but there is a very graphic description of a naked old man with in the first 10 pages and I didn't know what to do with that.

I have yet to find a priest as I like as much as the Columbia chaplain. Usually they have services on campus, but I believe the Holy Week ones are at Corpus Christi on 121 and Broadway.
