Teaching is a profession that is, unfortunately, filled with under-achievers. They avoid the hard classes in college and wind up with a degree that gives them no edge in a competitive job market. The thing is, they know that, so they take teaching credits so they can go into a non-competitive job market. They get a masters degree in education, the easiest degree on the planet, then insist they are highly educated and should be paid at least as much as any engineer with a masters, in addition to the time off and tenure. Teaching needs to completely eliminate tenure in the public school system. It simply does not make sense except at the research level, where it was designed to allow academic freedom in research. I don't want my kid's social studies teacher to have 'academic freedom'; I want teachers to stick to a rigorous curriculum and to teach it well. If they don't, I want them demoted and/or fired, not parked on a teacher's lounge somewhere.

Not to mention, in her professional career she has often forgotten the lyrics to songs she recorded and performed often. I'm guessing she doesn't stand up and put her hand over her heart on a regular basis. This was a boner not so much by Lauper, but by whoever chose her.

I became an incomplete quadriplegic following a plane crash 2 1/2 years ago. It took months to qualify, and more before the benefits began. I was without income for more than 6 months. The disability check I get is not enough to live on. Fortunately, my wife works part time, although she doesn’t like to leave me alone. Then there is the two year wait for medicare. What does someone like me do in the meantime? I have tens of thousands of dollars in unpaid medical bills and bill collectors calling every day because of it.

I think that was the point. She wants to emphasize the tragedy of the black inner-city experience. The failures of single parent households in the black community are beyond tragic. The over-representation of black men in prison is just one outcome. The reality is that most black men do not go to prison- but most of them live with poverty, poor educations, and joblessness that far exceeds the national average. It’s true that Barak Obama was raised mostly in a single-parent household, but it was an unusual one and he is an exceptionally bright man. Whoopie Goldberg can afford to provide every opportunity for her daughter, and by all accounts had a caring, supportive mother who even dreamed up her stage name (alias Caryn Johnson). Yet, for every Obama and Goldberg there are thousands of others with similar talent who are ridiculed if they excel in their shabby, dangerous schools. This is not to mention the even greater numbers with average abilities who are unable to achieve their potential. Caring, nuclear families are a very big part of the solution, and that’s the point. Here is a caring politician who wants to DO something, and you play politically-correct games rather than take advantage of her concern and interest.
