I'm tempted to interpret Carrot's honestly horrible subterfuge skillz as a passive-agressive measure to keep his honesty. (Remember in FoC how he instinctively understood the golems' way of "protesting by working"?) He won't disobey the orders to disguise himself, but he won't hide his identity from his own city. So he picks a disguise, but the worst disguise you could possibly think of. You can't get that bad without some creativity.
Maybe, maybe not. Normal people look at the world through a layer of self-presentation, analyzation, and all those things that keep you away from liars and dangerous people, and help you to lie if need be to protect yourself. Does Carrot look at the world through no layer, or two? I can't tell. "Behind Carrot's innocent stare was a steel door."

Yeah. Before I read Vimes I didn't know watching anger could be fun. Now I find Vimes's anger admirable (when it is), entertaining (when he goes a bit far and dominates a previously-ordinary conversation), and endearing (... always, pretty much).
