I believe you meant to say "Sentences that have never been used before, but will certainly be used repeatedly in the future." I'm certain that was the correct Jeopardy category.

That's not Prometheus and his eagle boyfriend, that's Prometheus and the creepy old guy down the street who only ever wears raincoats. (I mean, I love vultures, they are seriously underrated creatures, but... they ain't pretty.)

Oh my gods this is what I love* about the Toast. Intelligent, knowledgeable discussion from which I learn many new things, on the subject of whether Prometheus's eagle lover is more likely a boyfriend or a girlfriend. Oh, Toast. Oh, Toasties! * YES I REFUSE TO USE THE PAST TENSE COME AT ME MALLORY

In my experience, very nutritious things are rarely also favorite tasty things, but you never know, it may be different for eagles. (I too will miss the wonderfully weird conversations on the Toast.)

"Damn gods, always thinking of the human torture, but do they spare a thought for me? Would it have killed them to, say, curse him with the removal of an unspecified organ a day? I could do with a nice kidney pie. Even entrails would be a welcome change, but noooooo, liver AGAIN."

Thank you for that advice, because this alone is worth it: "Her power, her magic, was also a weapon of defense. But it would only work on people. It would not work on a chicken."

This is a nice and valid theory, but I also guarantee that you put in twenty times more effort just in typing this up than the showrunners did in thinking about it. Their only rationale for the speed of his journey was "The final scene must be perfect. We will do whatever it takes." (And honestly, it bothered me less than Littlefinger's ability to, what--teleport across Westeros? Because we've had plots turn on how long it takes to go the precise distance he traveled [Catelyn's journey to King's Landing & the Vale, Tyrion heading back through the Vale, Arya and the Watch recruits trying to get North---heck, even Robert coming up / going back down the Kingsroad] and we know it shouldn't be possible. But my only thought on seeing Arya already in the Riverlands was "Good on you, girl, for keeping that TARDIS handy.")

The Toast : Cocktail Hour: Open Thread

Everyone, including prestigious graduate programs, understands that one of the factors that determines college choices is finances. If you excel at what you do, and develop good mentoring relationships with professors (go to those office hours!), it doesn't matter whether your undergrad institution is academically renowned or not. The major difference will be the overall atmosphere of the place, not your success once you're done. A good way to figure out what programs are good is to comb through the resumes / CVs of people who are doing what you want to be doing. Where did they go? Also, grad students tend to be very aware of the positive & negative qualities of various programs, so they're a good resource if you know any... like say, people here!

(Actually, I know nothing about your city; it sounds like you're attending a school that's got a fairly well-off population, based solely and entirely on the quinoa anecdote!)

I would also make a point of asking about people of color in those positions, and out queer folk. Both of those things will tell you a great deal about a university. (For example, the uni i used to work at had quite a few women in high positions, but an astonishing dearth of POC and very few queers; the university priorities were about what you'd expect from that, i.e. it is NOT a place I would recommend to students with active minds, and certainly not to any students of color or queer students.) Another thing I would suggest, given that it sounds like you are from a city that is relatively well to do, is to ask about how many students at a given university are first-generation college students. Class diversity is probably even more rare in college than racial diversity, and first-generation college stats are collected by nearly all universities & give you a sense of the class diversity you might find. When we're talking about exploring other cultures within the US, different socioeconomic statuses can translate into vast cultural and experiential differences.

All I have to add to this beautiful set of comments is that there is a word in German (because of COURSE there is) that means "a face that looks like you'd like to hit it" - "Backpfeifengesicht." I usually use this term to describe my frankly horrifying governor Scott Walker, but it is equally apt to use it to refer to Trump. (You can also say he has "'ne Fresse zum reinhauen," if you want to be less one-word-poetic.)

I wanted to be Will so badly that I convinced my parents that what I really really really REEEEAAALLLY wanted for my 10th birthday was Welsh lessons. Which I kept up with for two years, and visited my Welsh teacher's family in Wales even, but now all I can say is "Tom is here," which is only useful in extreeeemely specific circumstances.

On the other hand, wouldn't the world be a little better if the Monks were the ones discussing that despicable man whose wife went & had herself a baby apparently all on her own, and then left?
