I know it is a laughing unthinkable matter that the New Deal instituted an economic recovery and the evidence that it hindered recovery is largely limited. Most of the reasons why a lot of New Deal programs did not work as well as they should have is that they did not go far enough. For example CWA and PWA were far better alternatives to FERA and were working, but FDR pulled the plug because he was worried about expense. It should also be noted that the 1938 recession was not due to markets having had enough of the New Deal, but that they had lost confidence because much of it was being withdrawn. Government had stepped up, but stepped down before business stepped up. Nevertheless largely due to Government actions the economy was better in 1938 than it was in 1933. Anyone who lived through those times, as my parents did, can tell you that the idea that the New Deal increased unemployment is simply nonsense. In areas like the AAA where this happened it was precisely because monied interests were allowed free reign and were not disciplined. However for people who like to whine "But... but...but...WWII not the New Deal..." the answer is simple: WWII was a massive spate of Government spending and it was GASP a planned economy.
