So you are saying they were aware it was unsafe, meaning they made the conscious decision of leaving a gun in the car knowing the dangers? Then it was their fault and no one elses. Don't try to find ways to punish the rest of us. It is indeed a matter of education and being responsible for your actions. Oh btw, being a leo doesn't make them anymore safer or smarter than the rest of us.

Does being a police officer make any that person any more safer than any other gun owner? No. Education makes people (including youngins). A lot of people see "kids" and "guns" in the same sentence and automatically freak. It doesn't need to be that way. For a toddler that doesn't understand I can agree guns need to be kept under direct control of the owner or put away out of access. But when the children start getting a bit more experience and can talk and understand things, a little talk with them about the guns in the house or wherever helps. Educate, educate, educate. I cannot stress it enough. Take the time and go over procedure on how to handle guns safely. Things like booger hooks off the bang switch, how to load, how to unload, how to set the manual safety. Go over it and break the curiosity of a youngin.

There is no problem with your statement of not owning guns. Some people can choose not to, and that is the beauty of things. However, your comment seems to imply that guns kill children. No, they do not. Negligence by human beings kill other human beings, children included. At the age of 3, I do not blame the child. I advocate for education and teaching the young but there is a point until the brain starts to really develop where you must take great care. This is one of those situations.

MORE laws are not the answer. The answer is EDUCATION not just for gun owners, but everyone else also! If I remember correctly, there is an RCW that states that if a gun is not on a person in a vehicle, it must be locked out of view. This did not happen. THIS is the fault of adult negligence. Why not be educated and keep the gun on his body? This is VERY SAD and did NOT have to happen. It was very preventable, as with all other incidents gun related or not. Follow simple rules and we will all be fine. I think the adult needs to be charged in this case. Use the already EXISTING laws we have; do not make anymore that are not going to do anybody any good.

KOMO - Seattle, WA : More burglaries spur more gun sales in Puget Sound | Local & Regional | Seattle News, Weather, Sport

AND REMEMBER, please educate everyone in the household about each firearm you bring home. Things like how to PROPERLY handle, load, and unload that specific firearm, how to work the manual safety (if there is one) and what the CONSEQUENCES are. Please include your children in these lessons; it is not about locking everything up and out of view. Teach the younger ones, as I have done in my household for every firearm I bring home and you WILL GREATLY reduce the risk of a negligent discharge. Tell the children if they ever want to go shoot, all they have to do is ask and you will take them. And follow through with that! I am willing to bet most of the children shooting incidents lately involved parents or guardians who did not go over these things with the children and hid firearms and treated them as if they were evil.

No laws you are suggesting would have prevented this incident (laws were already broken). If I remember correctly, the boy got the firearm from his mother who has extensive criminal records. Chances are, they are probably legally PROHIBITED from owning firearms in the first place. Also, children can only possess firearms under this RCW. http://apps.leg.wa.gov/rcw/default.aspx?cite=9.41... We already have laws in the books and some people still keep thinking we need more and more and more. How about ENFORCEMENT? Or how about you realize not everyone follows the law and will continue to do whatever they please?
