One Girl Her Backpack and a Passion for Travel : More than a little worried...

Have you spammed your address book yet, missy? Why don't you do a half-marathon now that you're ready for it and post more photos of you racing to ignite people to adopt your cause? When I was fundraising, I tweeted maybe once a day (but probably more) with the link for donating. I wrote people on a regular basis asking for donations. I sent email to my hairdresser, my dentist, and I had a blog dedicated just to training. I know you haven't had the chance to dedicate substantial time to fundraising, but it's nowhere near too late to go full speed ahead!

Gwen Bell Dot Com | Heart of the Start : United States of You: A Balm for Your Splintered, Mimicked & Bruised Brand

Oof. Oof. Gwen, this hit home on so many levels. I feel myself developing that "callus around my heart." In an arena where I used to be so open and free, I feel myself pulling back inside my shell. Who's watching me? Who's behind me? Who's taking notice for the wrong reasons? Who's talking about me? Who's quoting me? Who's criticizing me? Who's misinterpreting me? Who's annoyed by me? Who now hates me because they don't understand me? Shrink shrink. One way of keeping ourselves from splintering, like you say, is to be ourselves. I used to blog under an alter ego, but of course, I had to divide the online me and the offline me in order to do that. It felt fraudulent; I felt like I willfully pigeonholed myself. I don't do that any longer. In simply being Fayza, it makes treating other people like actual people (instead of screen names) much easier (not that I didn't before, but you know what I mean - nowhere to hide). Now if only everyone else would follow suit. In a perfect world(wide web). Since we cannot tell everyone to be themselves online, the only thing we have control over is our response. And your suggestions are spot on. We have to remember that sticks and stones don't break our bones, and when they threaten to do so, we have to remember how we'd act offline - and do it. It's okay to do that, and perhaps even more so - we are much more available and vulnerable online than we have ever been offline. Sometimes we may need to go into protectionist mode. That's okay, as long as it's only a learning curve and a temporary one, at that. In order to put this much of ourselves out there, yes, we have to thicken our skin. But it doesn't happen overnight. Thickening our skin is work, effort, and learned through a lot of hard, tough lessons. As long as we've gleaned those lessons, we are pushing forward. But just 'cause we've thickened doesn't mean we've hardened. We have to look out for #1 before we do any good for anyone else. Excellent, excellent, excellent post.
