MercatorNet : MercatorNet: The crime of sitting down

Liz, I commend you on your Pro-Life stance. However, I have difficulty in accepting Graham's lack of responsibility to his family. I presume he is the family bread winner, if so, then he should have thought about the consequences of breaking the law. If he is not the bread winner, then he still has an obligation to provide moral support to his family. Sorry, but I don't think he has done the right thing for the family.

MercatorNet : MercatorNet: I’ve lost my appetite for The Hunger Games

Rob, however, having said all that (in previous comment) I now feel compelled to read the book and go see the movie. By doing so, I am better equipped to advise my children whether they can read the books and see the movie. I guess in the end I should know what I am talking about, and not just relying on the say so of Clare Cannon.

MercatorNet : MercatorNet: Will Down Syndrome children disappear?

Just a quick note to suggest that people with Down Syndrome actually prefer being referred to as people with Down Syndrome, not as Down Syndrome people or Downs people. This is coming from my experiences with my niece, Lizzie, who has Down Syndrome. It’s a bit of a technicality, but they feel better about it.

Conniptions : Saints level with Pies in final seconds

Interestingly, the AFL drawn Grand Final has created dilemmas for people such as those that organised their weddings or birthday parties so as not to clash with the big Footy day. I hear on talk back radio that some of the invited guests have submitted late cancellations in favour of another day at the footy. How would you be? A bit cheesed off, I'd say!

MercatorNet : A revealing new study shows that, for donor offspring at least, being wanted isn\'t everything.

I cannot imagine the pain of the donor offspring not knowing who one half of them is. This is a serious social issue that needs more media attention. Mercatornet, well done!

@jamorod, I think you have missed the point of the article! Let me tell you what happened to me last Friday night. I had 10 Members ticket to ANZ STadium to see the Bulldogs take on the Dragons (it's Rugby League, a parochial sport here in Sydney, Australia). I invited some Dads and our children along. Now the spectacle of Live Sport is second to none! Well, I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw 1 of the boys (a 10 year old) playing with his bloody Nintendo DS. I mean, you pay seriously big money for these tickets (especially where we were sitting, nearly literally the Box Seats). Do you get my point?

I remember a fellow I went to university with (I'm an aussie, by the way!). He was a boy from the bush! Anyway his goal for his Optometry under-grad. degree was to get through with a Pass average. He now owns at least 2 Optometry shops in western NSW and flies between towns in his little areoplane. Guess you don't have to be top of the class to do well... Sorry if this comment was a tad parochial...but I felt compelled to share this story!

My concern, Scott, is some of these well meaning parents don't have a clue about Facebook. The other thing is they think their child is responsible but does it ever occur to them they should check occasionally what the on-line banter is about!

Maria, that is what is so Good about Facebook...maybe more stories like this should be told so we can share with our families. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said about Facebook and its use as a conduit of pornographic material via pictures and Comments (conversations) that tag along. Recently, I discovered some pornographic images and conversations on a 14 yo school girl's Facebook. This girl is in my daughter's class. Children this age don't have the maturity to deal with the fall-out that occurs. What can go wrong you may ask? Future employers will run checks on Facebook for the real You...Facebook photos of yourself that place a question mark on your character...other people can take a digital image of you without you knowing and it can be shared for the whole world to see. Even after the 14 year old girl removed the offending material from her Facebook account, she cannot be sure it was not copied elsewhere.
