FaithEngineer : Technology for Small Churches - Software

Powerpoint was designed for business presentations and is setup for linear presentations. Everything has to be in the correct order. Worship presentation software allows you to overlay text over video and also integrate Bible verses, videos, dvd clips, and songs in one software package. it also allows you to quickly change the order or even add things in spontaneously. Once you've used it, you'll appreciate the added flexibility. Thanks for joining the conversation.

FaithEngineer : Should We Dress Up in Church?

I appreciate you joining the conversation, but I'm having trouble following the argument of giving our best effort. Our best effort for Jesus does not involve how we look when we come together. In the post, I talked about how we view dressing up differently. If I don't tuck in my shirt, would that be disrespectful? Would $100 designer jeans be just as ostentatious as a $1000 suit? The way we dress can be very subjective, and if we make it the measuring stick for our faith, then haven't we missed the point of loving God and loving others? The church I pastor is in a downtown area in a city that has been hard hit by job-loss and poverty. We have many people that attend each week that have never gone to church before because their clothes aren't "nice enough" I have even heard stories where they have been asked to leave churches because they weren't dressed appropriately. I simply cannot reconcile the words of James 2 and how people view dressing up in church today. If we want to talk about giving our best to Christ, we should be talking about how we can give our clothes away to those who need them. That would be much closer to Biblical Christianity than the show that most Christians try to put on today.

FaithEngineer : Updates to Google Docs

I've had some problems with OpenOffice as well, but the newer versions don't seem to be near as bad as before. I've used both OpenOffice and NeoOffice on the mac with mixed results. But for basic documents and spreadsheets they work fine. The presentation program really is awful. I'll stick to using Keynote for those.

FaithEngineer : Updating Windows Can Be Dangerous To Your Health

Multiple users is definitely a problem. I've already changed admin rights to prevent anyone else from installing anything. I wish I could say the same thing about my windows experience. I haven't had too many problems on my own computer, but I have sure fixed tons of other peoples problems. Most can be traced back to viruses/malware, or driver and registry problems. With so many hardware combinations, inevitably you will run into driver issues. For example, the church computer has a video capture card, a high-end graphics card and is hooked up through firewire to the sound board for recording. There are lots of variables that can cause potential problems. The software you use also makes a difference. At my former job, the high end CAD packages were constantly crashing and locking up the high end windows workstations we were using. It seems that the harder you push the computers, the more problems you have. More complexity=greater problems I used to be a huge windows fan, until I got a mac. While macs do still have problems, they do tend to protect the user a little from their own stupidity. Windows gives you easy access to many things that can cause problems. The closed hardware architecture on a mac prevents competition, but it does give them the ability to better test their software. The biggest need I see for windows is to protect the system from being so easily hijacked by malware and viruses.

FaithEngineer : Updating Windows Can Be Dangerous To Your Health

On this particular computer the problem was the Adobe Flash upgrade. It didn't cause a blue screen, instead the computer just froze up. However, I had another computer that blue-screened at bootup that possibly did have the problem you mentioned. In fixing the computer, I ran across several sites that mentioned this, but I did see some conflicting accounts. I ran several scans through Norton on the aforementioned computer, but I think I'll go back and try Avira on it now that you mentioned this. Thanks for the tip. The main problem with the blue screen was that it prevented the computer from booting in safe mode as well. The only way to login was by booting off the Windows CD. The frustrating part of this is that you have to be an expert to fix any windows computer. And even then, most experts won't spend the time to fix it correctly. Most shops will just format the drive and reinstall windows. The joys of working on computers :-)

FaithEngineer : Facebook for Parents

I can definitely feel your pain. I have a 11 year old daughter as well. Many of her friends are on facebook, and there is already pressure to fit in and act older. I'm reminded of James Dobson book titled, Parenting isn't for Cowards. As parents, our job is tough and not always filled with easy answers. The good thing is that you are making an informed decision. If she gets an account, you know your responsibility to monitor it and keep her safe. I wish more parents would be involved in that way. One additional concern would be about the dangers of installing apps in facebook. It seems that is a major use of facebook by younger children. I have seen many children get facebook viruses lately due to installing bad apps. I hope facebook really cracks down on this and makes the site more secure. It's really getting annoying to see so many adults and children sending out messages because of viruses. You can vent anytime here. Thanks for your comments and I wish you the best.

Brian C. Russell | Creator of Stories : Big, Ridiculous Bang

There are a lot of assumptions in this post. Most, if not all, serious young-earth creationists believe in dinosaurs. The fact is there are many different ways to date the earth scientifically. They give wildly different ages. I'm not sure I understand why you have such a problem with people who believe differently. In the scope of eternity, does it really matter? Why spend time bashing others, who have spent time, both scientifically and prayerfully, in coming up with their beliefs. We should all be focusing on living out the Great Commission and building up the body.
