KOMO - Seattle, WA : Auburn council member says \'Photo Safe\' signs are misleading | | Auburn News

Security cameras the world over are hidden from view. Warning signs are remote from the camera positions. What's the big deal? The signs work. End of discussion as far as I'm concerned.

KOMO - Seattle, WA : Teen who was choked by teacher no longer feels safe at school | Local & Regional | Seattle News, Wea

In my opinion, this is the kind of kid who contributes to the pervasive mediocrity in Washington schools. Disruptive, distracting, disrespectful...the kind of kid who makes teachers ask for smaller classes so a lower percentage of students have their academic experience tainted by him. Very unfortunately, this teacher broke the no-hands ban, thus giving the kid a victim platform and driving the problem that he and his ilk create for students and educators out of the public focus.

KOMO - Seattle, WA : Breast cancer survivor implores state to drop challenge to \'Obamacare\' | Local & Regional | Seattl

My issue is with full-coverage premium levels/public funds paid across the board for a population (under 40 y/o) that is statistically very healthy/very low utilizers and not in need of soup-to-nuts coverage at the public expense. I have less of a problem with public funding of "catastrophic" coverage for major medical issues that is far less expensive. But, you know? It's interesting. So many of the under-40s who profess to be unable to buy insurance (boorrrring) own all or many of the latest tech devices, cool cars, etc. Why should the public pay for people whose priorities are screwed up and pay full coverage costs to boot?

KOMO - Seattle, WA : Burien puts the brakes on red light camera program | Local & Regional | Seattle News, Weather, Sport

Red light cameras rely on catching offenders breaking the law. Whether the program produces revenue is entirely beside the point. Show up at a funeral of a guy t-boned at a Kent intersection on his way home from work by a driver who ran the light if you need "hands-on" experience. If a camera deters that moron, just one moron, it's money well-spent.

KOMO - Seattle, WA : A long, somber farewell begins for Paterno | Sports | Seattle News, Weather, Sports, Breaking News |

Paterno was not an eye-witness to anything. The report he received was hearsay. He had no means to determine whether the reporter had some ax to grind with Sandusky, had an over-active imagination, had misinterpreted sounds/movements. He received no training on how to properly investigate an allegation of this nature, nor would he be expected to. He did exactly as he was supposed to...report it to the university administration that employs human resource professionals who ARE trained to investigate and, absent some obviously false claim, contact the authorities. The university, in a breathtaking act of cowardice and ass-covering, threw him to the lions of public opinion. But in the end, the jock outclassed them all.

Exactly. Dispense it out of pharmacies. That won't stop the potheads from whining/faking to their docs sufficiently to get scripts (recall the explosion of handicapped parking permits) but at least it'd be treated like a drug if it's dispensed like any other drug.

KOMO - Seattle, WA : Lawmakers near agreement on budget cuts, workers\' comp | Seattle News, Weather, Sports, Breaking Ne

The system as it currently exists allows someone with age-related arthritis to stop working and collect a work comp (tax-free) pension, often along with a company pension, if his/her range of motion is reduced and he/she claims, but doesn't have to prove, a work injury. If you hold a check for $150k up in front of an audience and say, "Anybody who can't raise their arm over their shoulder gets a check like this," how many people do you think will raise that arm? Same thing applies to a knee, a back, a neck...that's exactly how it is in Washington. Just pretend that at age 50 or so you "can't" accomplish full range of motion even though there's no scientific reason why you can't. That's all it takes. This nonsense that people with catastrophic injuries will be deprived of some benefit is utter bunk. The vast majority of pensions are awarded to workers in their 50s who have the aforementioned age-related degeneration, fudge their physical testing and find doctors who find it distasteful to admit that they're baffled about why their patient is presenting to be so disabled.

This is a great grandstanding opportunity for some dweeb EEOC lawyer looking for an identity beyond the bureaucracy. The ADA mandates "reasonable accommodation" for a person with a disability unless such accommodation results in the threat of harm to the disabled person and/or co-workers. A stool is a sure fall hazard for the person in question and a sure trip hazard for the co-workers.

This guy is clearly a dedicated educator and for that reason, I did all sorts of mental acrobats trying to figure out how to exonerate him. From all I've read, he was aware of and violated employment policy. He's no different from you or me. The employer has the right to make any rule as long as it's not discriminatory or illegal. If I've been properly informed of the rule and elect to break it, even if it seems arbitrary, I take the consequences that in most cases are spelled out exactly in the policy language. Once policies are breached or selectively enforced, they're worthless and a precedent has been set that invites others to violate as well.

In my opinion, this isn't about the relatively few people with horrible medical conditions who, if cannibis is beneficial, can have it distributed to them in much more secure arrangements than dispensaries. This is about wholesale legalization. Any moron can grow the stuff. Trying to tax it would be futile because users would morph into a growers who are off the radar.
