I really like the expansion of Hearth's Warming as a holiday. The traditions like dolls and flag-raising really make it seem like it's own distinct holiday, and not just a Christmas analogue. Not many cartoons would go to that effort in creating a world. The Pies were great fun. Just over-the-top enough to be real, and all distinct characters. Although apparently there are some weird religious sects going on, what with this Stone of Shipping. And the conflict felt genuine. The scene in the mine at the end was great. Overall, one of the better episode of the season. Someone posted a really fascinating commentary on FIMFiction about how this episode might imply a deeper social divide between the families. I figure t can be classified as "might as well be" canon so long as the show doesn't go against it. I can't think of anything in the EU that's really been invalidated though, except maybe Luna's comic series personality. Having loose world building really helps on that front.

I can imagine the episode progressing up to the usual "conflict rises and episode's character hammers down for a solution in a crazy illogical way" (particularly prevalent in Pinkie episodes, come to think of it)– and so Pinkie calls in the Crystal guards and goes all drill sergeant to keep an eye on this crazy magic baby, while she just giggles and chews things.
