Daily Camera.com: : Six Boulder mayors oppose ballot measures 300 and 301 - Boulder Daily Camera

These initiatives wouldn't have happened if Council and Planning Board had respected the 55’ Height Limit, voted in by ballot initiative in 1971. They've been giving exceptions out like candy to their developer friends -and refusing them to homeowners like those needing one because of a steep slope recently. They claim to be increasing density to save energy, but most of the new housing has been luxury apartments for the rich, not known for conserving energy. As far as I know, all these apartments have plenty of expensive underground parking, since rich people don't take the bus. These people consume MORE than the average, and so after a decade of this Boulder's greenhouse gas emissions have increased! They could have increased density and reduced GHGs by building smaller apartments without parking but with covenants that occupants would not own cars here. There is plenty of need for this kind of housing in Boulder for workers and students. But Boulder's leaders are empire builders and go for the higher taxes the rich pay for their consumption. So they increased our carbon footprint, dramatically increase traffic, and brought on the inevitable reaction to stop it.

Daily Camera.com: : Boulder homeless advocates get boost from feds\' stance against camping bans - Boulder Daily Camera

The late great Bob McFarland, MD gave Council the right solution back in the '60s: create a campground on the edge of town for visitors and homeless. I would suggest charging $5/night or 1/2 hour work cleaning, etc. Longer-term folks could be put in charge. Treat people decently and they will respond in kind.

Jared quotes the TPA: "No provision of any trade agreement entered into under section 3(b)..." I can't find the text of the TPA online to see if there are other sections under which trade treaties can be made, which would render this protection inoperative. If we can't read the text, we can't know anything. "Trust, but verify." Just Monday, the WTO over-ruled a US law on "country of origin" labeling for meat: http://www.usnews.com/news/business/articles/2015...

Daily Camera.com: : Colorado\'s 300 days a year of sunshine may be in jeopardy - Boulder Daily Camera

Having lived in Colorado all but seven of the last 45 years, and being a wilderness guide who is outside a great deal, I'm positive there's far less sunshine then there was back in 1970, at least in the Front Range. They can define "sunny day" in all kinds of clever ways to cover it up, but there are far more days with huge clouds of obscuring the sun most of the day. I bet there's only two thirds of the sunny hours there were back then. Here in Hawaii, a long time resident told me there are over a hundred less days of trade winds a year now. That's part of what makes Hawaii a paradise, less hot and humid than many other tropical places. The climate is already greatly degraded in my life. Thanks fossil corps, propagandists and deniers of all kinds. .

Daily Camera.com: : Paul Silverman: Voting on fuel taxes is democratic - Boulder Daily Camera

The "representative" part is really "misrepresentative." That's why Congress recently had an 8% approval rating. The "democratic" part -ballot initiatives- is how Colorado got, among other things in the last 20 yrs: the country's first legalized marijuana (Amendment 64), the country's strongest ban on lobbyists giving politicians "gifts" (41), the country's first Renewable Energy Mandate (37), campaign finance reform (27), increased K-12 funding (23), Background Checks for buyers at Gun Shows (22), Medical Marijuana (20), cleaner hog farms (14) and Term Limits (12). You obviously don't know much about our forefathers. For example: "The basis of our political systems is the right of the people to make and to alter their constitutions of government." -Washington “Each generation has a right to choose for itself the form of government it believes most promotive of its happiness.” -Jefferson “The People were, in fact, the fountain of all power, and by resorting to them, all difficulties were got over. They could alter constitutions as they pleased.” -Madison “What I want is to get done what the People would have me do. The problem for me is how to find out what that is exactly.” -Lincoln It's too bad you associate with wolves. Most of us are people, with compassion for other people. Nobody has ever been eaten or imprisoned by ballot initiative. "Representative" government imprisoned some 110,000 Japanese-Americans in concentration camps during WWII, hundreds of Communists and their friends who wouldn't name them (including some of the best in the entertainment industry) during the McCarthy era, and millions for smoking pot, for 77 years so far. Pay attention to facts instead of old dead theories written by the wolves eating our future. "

CAMERA: WHO stacked the panel unfairly? Polis?? IF the TPP were really about "free trade" it could be as short as: "All trade tariffs and duties will be reduced by 10% of the original per year until after 10 years they are zero." We don't really know how long it is because it's secret (even from most of Congress) but NAFTA is about 2000 pages of special industry deals, over-rides of labor and environmental laws, and even the gutting of Article 27 of Mexico's Constitution -which was a main cause of the Zapatista revolution. It's another example of "government against the people" and I'm surprised that Polis still is considering supporting it -and even the "fast track" railroading of it thru Congress without real debate or any transparency. As moabite says above, it's fascism, which Mussolini said should really be called corporatism.

Great letter. Here are my guesses as to why: 1. They hope to clear out the homeless by redecorating. And temporarily, as a construction area, it will work. But as you say it hardly fixes homelessness. 2. The City Council and the bureaucracy wants their names on a plaque for big shiny new things. 3. Redecoration is a big distraction from the real problems you cite. The City Council "Chambers" room has been expensively at least 4 times in my 35 yrs in Boulder. Still no improvement in what comes out of it.

These greedy sheriffs know that traffic deaths are way down since legalization: http://www.washingtonpost.com/news/the-watch/wp/2... They know that medical marijuana states have 9% less fatalities -likely because they also have 5% less drinking: http://www.ucdenver.edu/about/newsroom/newsreleas... They know that medical marijuana states have 10% less suicides: http://www.medicaldaily.com/medical-marijuana-cut... And they know that homicide and crime in general is down in medical marijuana states: http://reason.com/blog/2014/03/27/more-pot-less-c... The inescapable conclusion is that these sheriffs are very angry that crime and mayhem are decreasing, not to mention court dates, fines, prison populations, etc. Their business is threatened. This could be one reason for the recent apparent increase in violence by police: they have to CAUSE crime, which is their bread and butter. Waste your money, tin badges. The people have spoken and voted. Ballot initiatives literally rule: unlike laws, the Governor CAN'T veto them! All power to the people and the peaceful.
