SmartBlog On Social Media : Looking back at #SXSW: 3 ideas that dominated this year's show

I'll agree with you on this one Jesse, I saw topical marketing as huge at this year's SXSW. We've heard "content is king" for ages now, but it seemed more than ever that CONTEXT is as well.

SmartBlog On Social Media : How to make your Facebook content "Top News"

Hi Tommy, That is definitely a good extra bit of advice for those who are also doing Facebook ads. Applying that information to your unpaid fan page management could be very effective. Is this something you are doing on your page? How is it working out?

SmartBlog On Social Media : Hiring a social-media practitioner: What do you look for?

Thank you for your comment Andrew, and I totally agree. I want to highlight your last point--the fact that social media is a tool. By looking at social media as a tool, you help yourself define how and where to use it, and to what ends. Hiring for someone who knows how, when, and where to use it effectively is key.

SmartBlog On Social Media : "The Social Network": Facebook's lessons for innovators

Thank you Ramin for your comment. You definitely raise a lot of good points, but I still think that at a very basic level, the movie provides good lessons for start-ups. Not every company can or will be Facebook, that is completely right. However, Zuckerberg's story provides a lot of lessons. I think that while entrepreneurs often need to make many compromises along the way, keeping your eye on the ball--or the 3,000lb marlin, as it may be, is key.

Thanks for your comment. I think that the idea of communicating at off hours is totally dependent, as you mention, to where your audience is located. I have to say, however, that I have started posting at "off" hours for me (after work, weekends) and I have seen great engagement. It could be worth a test run for you! Good luck.

Great post Jesse. I'm sure a big part of this is figuring out where social media fits in a particular organization, whether it be marketing, PR, communications, ect. Did they touch on that at all in the session?

Hi Megan, that is a good question. Jay Baer actually mentioned that statistic in his presentation as one that came directly from Facebook itself. I'll dig around and see if I can find a source that directly quotes this, stay tuned!

SmartBlog On Social Media : Build a Facebook fan base by adding value

Interesting point, and I definitely see where you are coming from. I think, in all honesty, it depends on the content someone is posting and their frequency of posts. I moderate the fan page for SmartBrief, for example, and post about once a day at the moment--but do not "like" or comment on every post. That said, I think it is a balance. As the admin, I admit, I often do (actually) like a lot of the content I post, so I "like" it on our fan page more often than the general fan. If I started posting 3x a day, and "liking" every post, I agree it would be total overkill and would decrease the legitimacy of my like in the eyes of any other fan.

Thanks for you comment, Paddu. I agree, many of these seem obvious but I think that few companies really do this well. I know I am going to use them on our SmartBrief fan page, and I look forward to some positive changes. Good luck!

SmartBlog On Social Media : Brian Solis on giving your customers something to talk about

Hi Katie, sorry that you did not find this more valuable. Another great example of this, in my opinion, is the IKEA campaign a few years ago. IKEA put their entire catalogue online and the first person who tagged themselves as each piece of furniture got it sent to them. Thus, IKEA customers were aligning themselves publicly to the coffee table, bed, or lounge chair that they liked best, and in turn, IKEA got a lot of free advertising. What is your favorite example?
