Venezuela had a middle class at one time, but that is being squeezed into nothingness. A horrible infrastructure is nothing new, water service was horrible back in '04 when I visited and you had trouble finding a fair number of things in the grocery stores. Now things are worse and as my wife prepares to go back to visit her family she has to prepare herself for more privation than what she grew up with. Everything is expensive there. Chavez wants to have some hegemony in S.A. more than he wants to provide infrastructure for his people.
