Carlos, for the record Syd is no man although one might mistake her agressiveness with testicles - SHE is a diehard oppo. Sydney Hedderich is her name - living in Canada divorced and with a son. The rest is unimportant. So you know....

Caracas Chronicles : Elite Permutations

Quico exchanged money in the market where everyone changes money, there is no practical mechanism for exchanging money other than the parallel market, which is legal BTW. This is higher than the "official" rate which only exists in certain very restricted cases. If you are a tourist it is almost impossible to chaneg money. Quico's motives for the exchange was specifically to make a profit, not unlike the rest of the people he writes about in his post. Given the new light of his post and his previous participation in this system that is changing Venezuelan society, I am merely asking if his actions do not constitute acceptance of the system he alludes to be corrupting the country and by consequence society or vice versa. The island, if in fact it was an island, is insiginificant to this argument, and that is precisely what I stated in my original comment; which you completely misunderstood. If I remember correctly your degree is in engineering (?), Perhaps you should concentrate on that and leave complex social inquiries to those more qualified.

Caracas Chronicles : Elite Permutations

Let me put simply for you Mikey since you seem to be having some difficulty understanding basic concepts: *Quico traveled to Ven. *Quico exchanged money making a profit from the underground market *Quico writes a post about how the Ven. society is changing because of this. * What does this say about his or anyone's willingness to the change that he is writing about. In short he or anyone who partakes in this exchange is part and parcel of the Social paradigm shift. Recall how he starts his essay: you find yourself face-to-face with some hustler saying "bolivars? change dollars...good rate This is what I am referring to in my "Stupid" comment. Perhaps now you can better reflect on what I meant. Nowin addressin your comment: "The rich can take better advantage of it. Because one of the skills is having the money to buy goods. Like a car. Err.....Since when is having money a skill?!? Man, you would think that a Harvard graduate would know the deifference.

The skills needed to ride this particular gravy train - politicking, bureaucratic empire-building, scheming and intriguing - are skills that do precisely nothing to advance the welfare of Venezuelan society as a whole. If memory serves me right Quico, didnt you, on one of your trips to Ven. take part in this exchange to your benefit. I recall you wrote a post on it - a vacation to an island off the coast (?). Anyways, I left wondering how you, as someone with "The skills needed to ride this particular gravy train" can write a post such as this one having taken full advantage of the system in the past? What does that say about your willingess to change the Venezuelan society?

Nah my moral compass is well calibrated. efforts to aid a holocaust-denying autocrat's plans to obtain the means to nuke Israel. So, now you actually state what you really believe is going on with the Iran/Venezula connection, and this after stating that there isnt any real evidence provided in the report. That leads me assume that you have some sort of undeniable proof to assert this claim. Or were you just blowing a alot of hot air out your hairy ass? Its terrible to think that you lack the depth to digest the meaning of my comment. Perhaps another PhD is in order.

Reading the report, I too was struck by the amount of ambiguous cliches describing the evidence. But enough people have commented on that and I somewhat agree with Quico that the evidence would not necessarily be included in a report of that nature. However, the language does have that all too familiar "demonizing" quality that one is used to seeing from the rightist media. But what gets me most about the report is this: That means two of the world’s most dangerous regimes, the self-described “axis of unity,” will be acting together in our backyard on the development of nuclear and missile technology. References to Latin America as a backyard gives some serious insight into how the southern part of the hemisphere is perceived. Old time hawks like Morgenthau embrace this outdated image never once considering that it is phrases like this that, through time, has served as the foundation for anti US sentiment in Lat Am., and rightfully so!

Caracas Chronicles : Why are we talking about Antonio Ledezma in the first place?

One other thing Quico: You seem to buckle under pressure from your readers, highlighted most memorably by your non-post where you deleted a post only to have it re-printed on Oilwars, leaving no doubt an emotional scar at the least. I sensed by your comments a bit of back-tracking when you should instead be standing by your guns, mostly because you were correct on your first assertion. Dont let the radical oppo shrivel your cohones into a sack of nothingness.

People have a sense that, you know, "this must be big time news, after all, it's on Globovisión round-the-clock" without the insight to see that, in fact, it's big news because it's on Globovisión round-the-clock I applaud you Quico for calling it like it is. The bigger question some of your commentators should consider is; what is the function of the press? Or better yet what has been the function of Globovision during the last ten years? By nature this type of protest requires some sympathetic news organization to present the issue to the public. It would stand to reason that Globo would be the organization to highlight the hunger strike for obvious reasons. But one has to question the direness of the situation with the intended goals of this type of protest. Globo in this case is charged with saving the mans life, theoretically speaking, (im sure someone would arrange for some intravenous caldo de pollo if necessary) but in comparison, could one compare this protest to say... the Buddhists immolations during the Vietnam war, where the actions met their mark with international audiences serviced by the media. So what is the function of the press? Ill conceived and ill timed - thats my take on it aside from the fact that not many people care. Pass the caldo please...
