Uh, John, Ron Liebman wasn't nominated for an oscar for Norma Rae, probably should have been, but he wasn't.

Big Hollywood : Do Politics Drive Hollywood's Slow Response to Heartland Disasters?

You left out the Nashville floods last year. The other difference is that the heartland of the country is more self-sufficient , whereas the coasts are dependent on the feds for help.

Big Hollywood : Reader Question: Have Movies Gotten Worse Over the Last Ten Years?

It is always hard to judge the last ten years of film (no matter when you ask the question). Time changes everything. 20 years later you will watch a movie, and have a completely different reaction (why did I like that?) Also, with time, you tend to forget the awful movies. When you look back at the seventies, you remember the great comedies (Monty python and the holy grail, Animal House, Blazing saddles), you don't remember the hopelessly unfunny ones (did anyone see Rabbit Test, or The Last Remake of Beau Geste?). So, yes it does seem like movies have gotten worse over the last ten years, but I;ll wait a while before I decide/

Big Journalism : How to Blog at the Atlantic: Step 1, Impugn Motives of Actual Journalists...

Mr Friedersdorf, the problem is that you have blinders on. Lee's article is about the real story you were over looking in your article. The story of real people who have suffered. The article is about "journalists" who are so obsessed with politics, they can't see a real story which needs to be told. It is about agendas keeping the truth from being told. If you think Breitbart has squandered his credibility by letting his politics affect his journalism, okay, but can't you at least admit you are doing the same thing?

Big Hollywood : 2011 Best Picture Nomination Countdown: #8 – '127 Hours'

I don't think I have ever disagreed with you more. You touched on some of the themes for the film, but you seemed to miss the main one. The film is about the strength of the individual, and the ability to overcome extreme problems. We watch as he tries every logical solution, and then eventually does what seems to take super human fortitude. The scene is long and painful to watch, but that is the point. The movie is saying we all have it in ourselves to do the seemingly impossible. That we can go through unbelievably difficult situations and come out better for it. (he doesn't have his arm, but he is a more complete person). I found the film inspiring, and I would hope you will reconsider it.

Obviously The Ten Commandments, and Ben-hur. assuming your are including TV, Jesus of Nazareth has always been my favorite version of the life of Christ. Also, I would suggest Chariots of Fire, Quo Vadis, and a long shot but a long favorite of mine the Rankin/bass christmas special The Little Drummer Boy".

Big Hollywood : ...And Now a Holiday Message From Evangelical Atheist Ricky Gervais

I too am an agnostic, I don't know and I don't have faith (although I wish I did). The interesting thing to me is that Atheism is a faith based religion. They don't KNOW that there is no God, because it is impossible to know if there is a God or not, they just BELIEVE there is no God. That means they are operating on faith. Yet they ridicule believers for operating on faith. That is why I have no respect for atheists, they are intellectually dishonest, or else they haven't really put any thought into their ideas.

Big Journalism : Newsweek Shocked To Find Today's Kids Less Empathetic

You left out the self esteem craziness. When you teach your kids that they are great no matter what they do, it leads all of the bad behavior in your article. I didn't worry about my kids "self esteem". I praised them when they accomplished things and worked with them on how to improve when they didn't. And now they are strong empathetic young adults who are achieving things in life....funny how that works.

Big Journalism : Sunday Open Thread: He's Baaaack! (?)

This reminded me of what it was like to have a President. I disagreed with Clinton most of the time, but he was a President. Obama has never acted like a President, he has always seemed like a guy in over his head, who had no idea what to do. Kind of like Obama isn't a President, but he plays one on TV.

Big Journalism : The Atlantic’s Jeff Goldberg: ‘Don’t Donate To Those Rich Jews For Israel’s Fire Relief Fund

If you read this guys complete column, he is even farther gone than this article suggests. Goldberg suggests that only Jews would give to this fund. (did only Haitians give to the earthquake fund?) He is so lost in his stereotypes, that he can't imagine anyone who isn't Jewish wanting to help Israel. (I'm sure none of his friends would). He also lists "Jewish" cities in America, (obviously he has been talking to Jesse Jackson). Someone needs to tell this guy that there are Jews living all across this country. And that unlike his liberal circle of friends, there are people all over America, of all faiths, who want Israel to succeed, and care about people in need.

Big Hollywood : Classy Jennifer Grey: Bristol Palin Is a Lovely Girl Who Came a Long Way

Jennifer Grey is soooo classy, she has gone up in my opinion dramatically. It is amazing how the liberals made DWTS political, and then they became outraged when conservatives responded. Bristol lasted the first few weeks because there were dancers who were clearly worse, then she began to improve while others didn't, so she lasted a few more weeks. Then Liberals began screaming "conspiracy". Which led to people feeling the need to defend Bristol, and annoy the liberals. I think Bristol went from a weak dancer to a very good dancer. She shouldn't have won, but she was a legitimate final 5 or 6 dancers. The Liberals got her to the finals.

It is interesting how Brandy has been going around telling everyone she got robbed, leading to these Chicken Littles claiming the end of the show. Yet no one has brought up that maybe the reason Brandy was voted off was because she KILLED someone. Her reckless driving led to an innocent person's death, and she hasn't shown a lot of remorse. So, the real question might be, how did Brandy last so long on the show.
