Keep em' coming! Whether or she killed her past husband, she certainly didn't make up the story just for them. She'd thought about it. You can tell because she states, "I did some groundwork first, you know, going to the shelter, leaving my kids there, telling people about it so the whole town already knew what was going on." I might have a word or two wrong there, but certainly covers what she was trying to convey. Maybe she killed her husband and since it was self-defense, she wasn't charged. Maybe she didn't kill him, but thought about sometimes before she left him, wanting to & trying to figure out how to get away with it, but then decided not to. Point is, "Eden" has an abusive pimp she needs to get rid of, and whether or not this lady killed anybody, she's certainly willing to dish some advice on the best way to set it up as self-defense.
