I do think there has been an increased volume of representation of gay themes in all forms of media in recent years (Jack & Ianto, Tara & Willow) and this merely reflects the realisation that there are indeed gay people in society, in the same way the presence and portrayal of female and non-white figures changed over the last decades; so what can be perceived as shock value is really just an improvement in representation of the truth of the world we live in. I'd almost given up on Russell T giving us a strong story after some weak plotting in Dr Who but this was a cracker. The ending was darkly perfect and I suspect Jack will be back with a completely different Torchwood next year. It was sad to have a gay relationship in a high profile show end the way it did (I hadn't realised the parallels with Buffy at the time but I miss Tara too) but again it served as yet another reason for Jack (killing his grandson notwithstanding) to escape to outer space in pain.
