If this is not your intent then I would slow your approach down to gain more control and focus on stepping to the approach in a straight line. Hi Mike, May we ask what weight ball you are throwing and what kind? Having a naturally fast swing isn't necessarily a bad thing - as long as the swing is free and loose, like a pendulum. Being able to consistently repeat shots is key. Depending on where your target is on the lanes, making an adjustment to where you are standing on the approach may be a better solution before trying to alter/change your swing. USBC Rulebook states only about lane courtesy/approach courtesy in the Etiquette Information; not in the "official" rules listed. As the sport has evolved, so have the lane surfaces, oil volumes and materials, and ball materials. The rubber and urethane balls of the past worked because there was a few mil. of oil on wooden lanes, as apposed to the 25-35 mil. now used on (mostly) synthetic lanes. Also, the technique in which the oil is applied to the lanes has changed. Although urethane bowling balls are making a come back, the overall technology and demand for "more hook" on the lanes has changed the reaction. To answer your question about rosin, per the USBC Rule Book, page 14, Rule 12, "Detracting from the possibility of other players having normal conditions is prohibited. This includes: a. The application for any foreign substance on any part of the approach. b.
