We are all in debt to JJ Goldberg. This is the kind of "in the weeds" reporting we need. Mindless invocations of Auschwitz and similar entirely disserve our honestly engaging the complexity of the situation we face right now.

You are correct; I stand corrected.

The "white buses" were a collaborative effort of the IRC and countries along with Denmark--especially Sweden. This was mostly very late in the war, virtually at liberation, but important nevertheless.

Not accurate. Terezin was in Czech., not Germany. No one was "taken out" as far as I know. The RC allowed themselves to buy into the charade that was Theresienstadt. They recognized that failure in being much more determined to be helpful in Rwanda, which they were relative to almost anyone else.

The more relevant story is what happened to not-Danish Jews--mostly Polish--who were seeking asylum in Denmark. More or less what happened in France.

I guess we are all tribal.

A lot of this now comes down to whether Putin will be successful in his attempt to grow chest hair.

Good grief. I hope most of us DO care about the killing in Syria. All those kids are "Islamic psychos"? And the tens of thousands who have fled their homes to get out of the way?

It is pitiful that this even needs to be written.

I essentially agree with JJ Goldberg's piece, but there is an additional angle. In almost every major intervention over the past two decades (Somalia and Grenada excepted), Holocaust imagery has been involved. Thus:

--the trains carrying "disappeared" in Kosovo.
--the skeletal prisoners beyond barbed wire in a Serbian camp (a photo we now know was set up; it was wire from a chicken coop, used precisely because of anticipated Holocaust associations).
--And, of course, gassings.

Conversely, the horrors in Rwanda or Cambodia did not "look like" the Holocaust. Among other reasons, it was easier to do nothing.

(and, yes, race also played a role)

good grief. Well, me and the animals appreciate you!

Speaking of which, the only "dog" was the fact that I am a friend/colleague who became involved. No personal or institutional interest beyond.

But passion is a good thing. The words I used paralleled the words used by others who were involved, all of whom are much better known than I am. So, in this case, we must all be eating the same meat.

"Copping out." Until we meet again.

as you wish to imagine it (although inaccurate). Since we are now writing on very small scrolls, I'll let this one be my last. Shana tova.

Frankly, in the interest of my own anonymity, which--were I to explain that further--would also not be in that interest.
