Race Relations Project : Women

I believe she is completely right it is not what a women looks like that matter it’s really their personality however Hollywood doesn’t help the situation and neither does society. For example within my group of friends there is almost a certain standard for women if you are with a woman who is below the standard than you are looked down upon. I know this isn’t right but it happens with several aspects in life with guys like how much you can drink, if you can drink more people like you more and if you can’t drink much people look down upon you. It does seem like Hollywood has guys set on what a woman should look like and at this point in life, a college student, looks are a major priority to guys because the chances are most things won’t last long because of all the drama and stress associate with women. So just a little advice to the women out there if you are looking for a guy that actually cares about you for you and not your looks don’t be superficial if you are looking for a guy to be all over you at a party dress up a little and put on some make-up and guys will be all over you it’s your choice.

Race Relations Project : What about the men?

As a male I believe there isn’t a lot of force to conform to society. However, when I actually sit down and think about it, I believe there are a lot of natural or unconscious decisions to conform to society. I played football in high school so I always hung out with my football buddies and we would always do similar things such as watch the games and go out to eat and just kind of chill around town however it never really was conforming to society it is more like conforming to your group of friends. I believe it is very similar with females. I have met several females ranging in a vast array of characteristics. I don’t believe it is society that shapes us but the actual people we hang out with. Maybe this question isn’t as much what shapes us personality wise but the things we do. There are just certain things that certain genders do and if you do the opposite society frowns upon it I honestly disagree with this but it’s the way people treat it. There are things that are considered to be “feminine” so girls in the field are accepted by society but guys are looked at as “gay” even if they are not. This is where I believe we have a larger problem then what we wear because honestly girls wear what they wear so guys notice them. If their friends all wore clothing that did cover them up more guys would still find their way to them and they wouldn’t be conforming to society as we say they do. Women just believe that they have to do certain things and dress certain ways but the fact is most guys really just don’t care. We all, us guys, conform some such as we don’t wear sweat pants out to parties we usually wear jeans and a nice shirt or polo. It’s just girls at parties don’t only wear jeans and a nice top but they have to go out and get new dresses and never can wear the same one twice. I’m not sure why most girls are like that or even a lot of guys have to wear brand new clothing or a certain brand. I honestly believe it’s a status that we all hold each other to. People get so caught up in their “status” such as their group, culture, race, class, and many other categories that we have to conform to which ever means most to us. The problem is more of us need to conform to ourselves. I don’t think it’s a sex thing I think its humanity. We notice it more with girls and girls admit to it guys seem to do it more unconsciously but if you ask them why they actually are doing something or wearing something and they actually think about it is what means most to them.

Race Relations Project : Creating Terrorists

I honestly am not one who is a fan of an eye for an eye. However I am a strong believer that there is no place on earth for 1st degree murders, otherwise known as people who proceed with a premeditated murder. If you have the brain to actually think out a murder and fulfill I don’t believe there is a place on earth for these people. Other types of murders are done in a fight where honestly if I got in a fight my Dad always told me if they throw a punch make sure he looks worse than you at the end. So after laying out my values if someone actually killed one of my family members not by a means of a fight or something they did. There is no doubt in my mind if they get locked up it would be for their own good because I would revenge their death not by suicide but by other means.

Race Relations Project : Christian Invaders - the turnaround

I believe religion has been driving wars since its inception. Wars have been driven by either land or religion for a long time now and Christian’s like any other religion is for everyone to be their religion. The problem is now Christianity has been watered down and doesn’t mean as much to people now and there are a lot more religions now then there were in the past. However I don’t believe this war against terrorism has anything to do with religion because it religion is not in the forefront of all Americans minds any more. The war is obviously driven by resources and in reality the United States wants to have control of the world. I am really excited for this class because we don’t get to see this scenario everyday and we don’t get to put on a different lens and think how other people feel, we just take what we have for granted.

Race Relations Project : What about the women issue?

Affirmative Action I believe is almost passed its time. With the equality becoming closer and closer between races and sexes the differences are closing in. It is all in our minds now that women and men deserve equal opportunities and the same with whites and blacks. In reality when going for a job everything should be thrown out the window. There shouldn’t be quotas on how many minorities or females should be hired it should be computed strictly from their resumes and interviews. I believe there should be some sort form of assistance to people who are in a less fortunate state. I personally didn’t have to worry about how I was going to make it to college and get a degree. There are plenty of individuals out there however who are in less fortunate positions. We should provide people who are unable to afford education an opportunity to prove themselves that they should earn money for education.

Race Relations Project : This is totally off the hook

I have been concerned on where video games have been heading for quite awhile now. Myself personally I do not get too caught up in the Role Playing Games most commonly called RPG’s I am more personally intrigued on the sports games and some of the first person shooters. The sports video games I don’t believe anyone really has a problem with because it is basically the same thing as sitting there and watching the game on television. First person shooters on the other hand which I do play, I believe there is some controversy on where they are heading becoming more realistic and closer to becoming an actual marine in the video game world. All of these steps towards becoming an Avatar are scary because people may become confused on what’s real and what’s not. Now making your Avatar a rapist is just out of this world to me. Killing takes a lot of materials to accomplish but raping someone is as easy as walking to the Uni-mart for a late night snack if you choose to. There needs to be some great steps taken in this area or we may have some major problems in society.

Race Relations Project : What About Multiracial People?

It really is a tough position I honestly don’t like all of the talk about white team and brown/black team I honestly think its all nonsense but I understand how it fits into the class. For the purpose of this class I believe since you grew up in a Hispanic household and grew up being treated differently for being Hispanic then you should consider yourself Hispanic. If it had no effect on you growing up for arguments sake you should stay on the white team. I believe that is where Sam is going with this. I believe he is saying the White team means you haven’t had a real racism towards you or real discrimination towards you. So I believe for the purpose of argument that if a White person were too grow up in a prominently black neighborhood for the discussion they really should be considered to be on the black/brown team. I really believe the team aspect has to do with have you experienced discrimination/racism or not.

Race Relations Project : How Can We Ever "Win"?

What a great question because at first look honestly I laughed because I have friends who we say and even they say they act white and they aren’t really black. At first I never really thought anything of this however going through the steps I am believe I am now in a position where I really don’t classify people based on their color. I honestly believe we are all American and we all have our own sub-cultures in America. It’s not only “black” people who were flat brimmed hats and listen to rap and hip hop people of all colors do these same actions. I would have to classify this sub-culture as it own but has nothing to do with the color of your skin. Just like the preppy style there are plenty of whites, blacks, browns, purples, whatever color you want to call someone. It really at this point is coming to a point where we are saying O you are a red head or O you have a certain hair style I honestly believe we all owe each other a favor and need to start moving past all of this acting black because we could also say you acting blonde.

Race Relations Project : Nothing About the Census is Easy

I really hope that all of this controversy over the census goes away in the near future. I really believe we are just asking for racism when we ask people to claim their ethnicity. The problem is the way the questions are be asked people are putting down their ethnicity. So if my father is 100% Italian I am 50% Italian so does that mean I put Italian on my Ethnicity? No I don’t I put White or Caucasian however if you ask an African American whose family has been here 3 or 4 generations the same as mine they would put African American on the census. What are we asking for here? We really need to clear this up because honestly I am becoming fed up with this because for the majority of us we are American don’t matter where our ancestors are from we should be viewed as American. I believe if we are trying to find newly immigrated people then ask if you have moved into the country in your life time where were you originally from or something along those lines. However asking us if we are black, Negro, or afro-American I don’t think is solving anything because in reality the majority of them are just plain old American like the majority of people in this fine country. I don’t know how everyone else feels about this but I hope it all goes away on the next census. I have heard stories from my ancestors about how they were looked down upon for being Italian and other ethnicities had the same treatment however we are living in that day and age where most people were newly immigrated. We are now living in a day in age where most of the people living here have been living here for generations. A very low percentage of people are actually newly immigrated. So what are we really asking when we ask on the census if you are Black, Negro, African American, or Hispanic? I really cannot figure it out if we are trying to figure out where lower-income people are living that has nothing to do with color. If we are trying to figure out who needs money that doesn’t matter on color. I really believe that we are keeping the issue around my continuing to ask this question. We all should be considered Americans nothing more, nothing less. These two questions I believe should be thrown out completely there is no reason to ask. If we don’t want to segregate and we want as much equality as possible we should all be looked at as Americans not only specify some people as a certain ethnicity because of their skin color.

Race Relations Project : What are all of you thinking about Asians?

I believe that he has a very strong point Asians really should be included in the minority I believe because they are not the majority, White Caucasian, race. The reason they may not be considered is because they are not discriminated as much as brown and black people especially when it comes to getting interest rates and getting into schools it almost helps them being of Asian descent. We like to think they are discriminated, by then I mean Asian, but they really are discriminated against by being called derogatory terms that many cultures aren’t called anymore. I know from my family that when my Dad was in school is town use to discriminate against Italians calling them derogatory terms, however this doesn’t happen any more so we can now focus on fewer and fewer groups which I believe is a big step forward for America. I believe that in the next 50 years that we aren’t going event o be having this conversation of are Asians minorities because we will most likely have a large array of cultures and more and more actual American cultures.

Race Relations Project : Native Hawaiians. Ever think of them?

I don’t know who this doesn’t baffle that we do not give people whose land we are on their rights. We have done it for every other group even though we still don’t treat them right at least we gave them something a reservation and their own government. At first I thought that it could be because we don’t see it every day and its way out there however so are the Alaskan tribes. So this is not only downright disrespectful to our indigenous people but also is ignorant. We are ignorant as American’s not to recognize this group and leaving them completely homeless. We need to make some big moves fast and hopefully since our President who is a Hawaiian native we can get this accomplished in the near future. Here is another reason that this is really ridiculous that a place where our president once lived is still living in these conditions.

Race Relations Project : Is this just a few bad apples?

This report of downright harassment is completely unacceptable to me as an American. How would you feel if people at Penn State started yelling racial slurs at someone in power at Penn State or even someone that just represent Penn State. I would be offended that my university acted in that way without even thinking about what party it is for. The party doesn’t matter for that I realize as a Democrat I would feel embarrassed and upset with my fellow party members if I were a Republican and honestly I would feel the same when in the reverse roll. However since this sort of actions are still happening in America “We” as Americans need to do something about it. I understand that it is a freedom to protest and that’s something that makes America amazing however people seem to abuse these freedoms way too often. It is great that these people are using one of their rights which many neglect to use which is freedom of speech however we need to be careful on how we use this freedom. I honestly believe people there if they heard the word being yelled should have turned around and asked the person “what the hell are you thinking?” I have always believed that you may not necessarily like someone but that is no reason to disrespect them even to get a point across. Even as a Democrat, if I were protesting and yelling things to get the opposition or even my own side to change their mind there is no excuse for this type of behavior. There should be legal action taken because this is downright harassment and for arguments sake I believe it is next to shooting at someone. We allow people to get this close and we abuse these rights and freedoms. I always believe if you don’t like something you better have a reason for it and not just dislike it. When protesting you need to have an opinion and not just hate the opposing party. For example I am for Health care reform and I honestly don’t know who isn’t for providing health care to all and lowering the cost of Health Care. However with our party ties we say and do other things. I currently have friends who are without health care because their parents would not cover them when they entered college and it is too expensive to pay for it. This is scary to me because if something were to happen to one of them they would be in a lot of trouble. I know there are many oppositions to health care I just don’t know who would want someone close to be unprotected like this. We all as American deserve this and we need to respect one another.

Race Relations Project : What happens to multiracial people?

I can’t really even decide for myself what happens to multi-racial people. I would have to say by default if you feel as though you are treated differently than ordinary white people you would have to consider yourself a person of color. I feel as though the when Sam posted the question was aimed at the discrimination and basically not the inequality between the two groups. So if you believe that people look at you differently than an ordinary white person I would have to say you should respond as a person of color because that’s what we are trying to figure out in race relations. We are not just looking at the normal everyday things we are trying to get to the roots because myself being a white person I don’t know what it is but something makes me look at people of color differently I don’t know what it is and I have plenty of friends of color and even my best friend is a person of color but something makes me look at people of color differently. I hope we can all get to the roots so future students don’t even have to talk about.

Race Relations Project : Does this rudeness thing cut both ways?

This question really makes me think, by that I mean I never really think of people of color being rude to white people. I’m not really programmed to think like that I always treat people the same but when I sit back and think about if a white person says something rude they are getting bombarded and if a person of color says something rude it’s just another statement no bombarding. I don’t know what it is I feel as though people of color say some things because they feel they have to get back and then some white people are just being straight up rude. I really believe the rudeness is deserved when it is dished out by people of color most of the time they aren’t instigating because they really have no reason to they know you have more things and worse things to say but they just let it go they really only make scene when a white person says something rude.

Race Relations Project : I Reckon She Can Hit

I reckon she could hit harder than some of the kids I played with in High School as well. I have played football since I can remember and it has been a pride and joy of my life and it is a pretty difficult for me to accept women into the sport. I honestly don’t know what I would have done if my coach was a woman because there are lots of things I can remember from football in high school that I would not say or do in front of the opposite sex. Even though she has the credentials, playing for a professional football team even though it is women’s football, I would have trouble opening up and having that “team” atmosphere that I believe is necessary for a successful team. However I cannot shun her completely because I have not actually went through a practice with her. It is going to be extremely tough for her because it has never been done. Being the first is never easy. I know for sure if that team loses a game no matter what the reason she is going to be the first to blame. It happens with new coaches all the time; however a woman head coach just makes it that much easier for her to be scapegoat. I believe during this interview she is being extremely calm, collected, and respectful but I feel as though when she puts those pads on she really has some bottled up aggression. In this case she has something to play for. I believe that when you play “for” something you are going to play your best and now in her case coach the best. Even though many people take woman’s football as a joke and just another way for guys to look at women but I definitely would give the sport a chance because even though I believe women’s sports are not as exciting as men’s sports doesn’t mean they should have them. There are many sports out there I wouldn’t be caught dead watching. If we can sit here a make arm wrestling a professional sport there is absolutely no reason Women’s Football shouldn’t be. This woman in particular I believe could have competed quiet well in high school because from the video it looks as though she is a wide receiver and most high school receivers are smaller than and not as physical as other positions so I believe she could have been successful in high school if her Dad would have let her play. But who can fault the father because what guy in his right mind wouldn’t want to date tom-boy that not only loves football that plays it. I know for sure I would give it a shot. I hope it works out for her as a Head Coach because a lot of woman around the world are supporting her and hoping she can succeed not only for herself but for women of all types.

Unbelievable is what I have to say for Abercrombie I am already non supportive of the company because I believe it represents a “fake” person, by that I mean people are wearing things that are making them someone besides themselves. Our First amendment, our freedoms, one of which being religion, there is no excuse for her not being able to wear her religious head wear. This is just downright discrimination unless Abercrombie wants to act like a Hooters where unless you are an attractive waitress with large “hooters” you aren’t hired. I believe this a very similar policy because they both are aiming for a specific demographic and culture and this particular one is not on that Abercrombie wants representing their apparel.

This is unbelievable that this is still happening in the United States and in California of all places. It is hard to believe this type of behavior when you don’t see it. Living in State College all of my life I have never experienced anything in this nature. I have lots of friends of color and if we were to have a ghetto party or something of that sort it was jokingly and my friends even joined in. I don’t understand the KKK hood and the noose in the library that is just taking it way to far. I believe we can all handle a joke here in there such as a “ghetto party” but these measures these individuals took it to is unacceptable.

Race Relations Project : What's With the Theme Parties?

I see what she is talking about there is several themed parties but I don’t believe they are aimed at any group in particular. Especially this time of the year there have been several “Jersey Shore” parties which involved gelling your hair up and looking like Guido. Then the ladies followed through with their puffed hair and crazy accents. Most of us either participated in this sort of party or have seen people participating dancing with their fist pumps and several other sorts of jesters. On the side that it is centered on “blackness” for a party I think is quiet absurd but I suppose it has happened. When there is a party centered on that it is usually over exaggerating the culture. For example if there was a “black” party people would dress up with afros and probably a hat with a straight brim and maybe even some low pants to add a touch. I don’t believe this is being derogatory it’s just trying to act like someone besides yourself and have fun. If anything I actually believe it would help break culture boundaries because people are crossing over and doing something are not so comfortable wearing. Another type of theme party that is seen a lot that could be seen as offensive as well are Mexican parties. These are clearly centered on the idea of living a “Mexican” lifestyle such as sombreros, nachos, tequila, and tacos. I personally enjoy these parties speaking a little Spanish and calling people Mexican names however it is all in good fun because quite frankly the culture that I am a part of there isn’t much to it. There aren’t too many things I do as a “State Collegian” that I could say makes my culture different than yours it is just too bland. These parties are not derogatory in any fashion to my knowledge but maybe I don’t understand it because it is not about my culture. Maybe if I saw someone partying around my culture it would offend me because they don’t actually know what the culture is about. I believe themed parties are just another excuse to party. People are always looking for an excuse to party birthdays, holiday’s and now themed parties. I personally enjoy them because it gives you something extra than just another party. When you actually bring your apparel into the party and the atmosphere it makes for a fun experience. I don’t believe it has to with race because there are always “Jersey Shore” parties and even “Prep” parties where people where popped collars and most people know people that dress like that every day. Even of the same color. If this is offensive to people we should definitely try to figure out a compromise because it my nature it is not about being offensive.

Race Relations Project : Inequality Class: Question One

I agree with him in the position about the rate of crime in different areas and it is quiet difficult to control for so many aspects that would definitely be an area in which should be blocked for in the future to represent better test results. A lot about what you do is dependent on where you live. Me, myself growing up in a college town had many jobs taken away from me because there were more well qualified college students looking for a job so saying how many high school students have jobs here would not be a precise test compared to a town without a large college. Would definitely improve some statistics if we blocked for certain situation and not putting it across huge demographics which change statistics.

Race Relations Project : Could You Compete With This Woman On A Level Playing Field?

As a student majoring in business I believe that is not necessarily possible for anybody to become a successful CEO in our country or in many countries around the world. Its not only a believe but a fact that CEO’s have the highest IQ’s on average compared to any other industry. That is quiet astonishing because not that I don’t believe this woman is smart but that it takes a lot to have one of the highest IQ’s. Leaving that aside I believe if we were to insert this woman into our world she would have a lot better chance because we do live in a world where you can work your way up in businesses and are not just stuck at a particular point.
