http://fangsforthefantasy.blogspot.com/ : Game of Thrones, Season 3, Episode 10: Mhysa

I'm a bit sad that they handled the Reek thing so bluntly. In the books, it's not spelled out from the beginning that Reek is Theon, especially not in book three. You gets hints here and there, but not much else for quite a while. Although, I for one wouldn't know how to keep the fact that Reek is Theon in the dark for the TV series, where you can see him. And yes, the last scene made me uncomfortable too. *slight spoilers ahead* Since I read the books and know how it continues, you could argue that this is the beginning of a deconstruction of the white saviour trope... But yeah, you still have the masses of brown people worshipping a blond and white person here.

Well, it was Robb's decapitated body with the dire wolf head in place of Robb's. Just to make it absolutely clear. :)

Womanist Musings : The Problem With 'Breaking Amish'

It's "reality TV". Colour me unsurprised that it's all lies. Call me a cynic, but from what I've heard and seen of TV in both the US and Germany, that seems to be the modus operandi for most of what passes as entertainment nowadays.

Womanist Musings : Is Copyright Really Benefiting Us?

This is why the Copyleft and Free Culture movements exists, with their FLOSS and Creative Commons licenses. There's also been discussions about removing the non-derivatives and non-commercial clauses from the CC 4.0 licenses (currently in draft stage), exactly because they run counter to the Free Culture idea CC is supposed to embody.

Womanist Musings : It's Not Hard for Privileged People to Pretend to be Marginalized

Oh, this is a bit of an eye-opener for me. I've never thought about Black Like Me like that. I read it in English class (in 9th grade, IIRC), and for me, it was the first contact with the reality that racism (outside of Nazi Germany) is not a thing of the distant past (I know, I was even more naive back then). I see your point, though.

Womanist Musings : When Baking Becomes Homework

At least the actual measuring only takes 10 minutes. I guess you're not all too fond of the actual work that is kneading shortcrust pastry, folding in beaten egg whites, forming and arranging crumbles and/or skinning and quartering dozens of apples, either then? That, and the time you have to wait between steps, especially when doing a cream-based gateaux (for the base to cool down, the cream to stiffen, etc.) feels like a bit of a drag to me too, but nothing I can't get over with music or a podcast playing in the background. Also, I just love the resulting cake too much. :) Of course, YMMV.

Well, I for one love baking... How can I not; I mean, the result is delicious cake (my only regret is that lately, I've not had the time to experiment, and dozens of photos of the same damn cake would look silly). :) Although, I don't use measuring cups. Being an European, recipes here are in metric units, with flour, etc. measured by weight and not by volume, so I've got some trusty kitches scales. So that might be a compromise of sorts for you, no? :P

Womanist Musings : When It Comes to Same Sex Marriage There is no Other Side

Even more ludicrous is this statement: "The Bible was deliberately misinterpreted to justify slavery [...]. However, [...] the Bible’s opposition to homosexuality is unambiguous". There's really no way that anyone can argue that the bible is anti-slavery; it's condoned throughout. Slavery was, for most of our recorded history, a common practice and the bible, being a product of its time, of course reflects that. And the common argument that the slavery as portrayed in the bible was no "real" slavery, but more like a employment contract is an unfounded red herring too.

Womanist Musings : The Great Popcorn Cuss Out

While I do agree that kids need freedom (of speech and action), he /was/ way out of line what the topic was concerned. Buying (*gasp*) no-name popcorn is a huge sin? It's being "cheap"? Being frugal (especially when it's about an unnecessity such as popcorn) is now bad? I'm especially surprised that you just laughed instead of using that as an opportunity to discuss how brands works. Wouldn't letting this go unopposed (by reasoned arguments) strengthen his view that a popular brand name and a high price correlates with quality? Especially when you consider that many supermarket brands are manufactured by the same company as the expensive counterpart, and you essential just pay for the name.

Womanist Musings : Gotcha and the Public vs Private Divide

Well, I do not blog either (at least not about personal things, I do have very sporadically updated blog about my geek endavours). But when I comment, I always use the same nickname with the same avatar, often with my realname attached to it too, if possible; and my website linked. With some quick googling, it's quite easy to find my various blog profiles and comments. So although I do not blog about personal matters, my many mistakes and failures are open to see.

Womanist Musings : Is Touching Black Women's Hair Racist?

I still can't get my head around the fact that anyone thinks "Can I touch your hair?" (or any other bodypart, for that matter) is appropriate. Doubly so when we're talking about strangers. And I'm a socially awkward geek. Hell, I can't even fathom someone coming up with that question in the first place. I never wanted to touch someone just for the touching sake. When I hug, comfort a friend, or jokingly pat them on the head, I'll of course touch their hair, but the question "Can I touch this?" alone is so ridiculous that it's basically implied that I probably should touch that person anyway.

Just a heads-up, the "Feminism 101" link is broken. It seems to link to something you'd get directly after creating a blog to configure it or something ("/post-create.g?blogID=$SomeID"). Following it just leads to a generic blogger site prompting you to create your own blog.

Currently reading "House of Chains" by Steve Erikson, fourth volume of the "Malazan Book of the Fallen" series. Not quite as bleak and brutal as the two previous volumes, at least not yet (I'm half-way through)... Only one book recommendation is hard, impossibly hard. So I'm going for the first book that comes to my mind (and skipping the classics that are wildly known already). Since I'm currently feeling pretty melancholical, that would be "Dying of the Light" by George R. R. Martin. It's a quite dark and depressing Science Fiction novel focusing on a complex, non-standard inter-species/inter-culture relationship.

Heh, I can related to that. I've been more than once caught by my parents when reading under the blanket with a flashlight. And when not caught, I read through the whole night. Should I have kids one day, I sure hope I can them to pick reading up too. Got a long list of classics I'd love to share with them... Books that shaped my thinking, my hopes and dreams...
