While Mr. Mitchell may be an extreme case, he's not the only person who feels left out of the process and the City does what it can to hide facts, misrepresent figures, and work to otherwise bamboozle those that the ruling class view as speed bumps along the way to fulfilling their agendas. One only has to look at the lack of transparency in the Henry Administration. A perfect example being the decision to name the 9, 12, 14, 18, 22, 27 million dollar building "Citizen's Square". The name was decided months before the Vice Mayor had the brilliant idea to ask for ignorant citizens to submit naming ideas to an internet website to give those poor souls the impression that their voices were actually being heard and acted upon. Another example occurred when then Council President Bender proposed making meetings run smoother by quenching unnecessary citizen comment at meetings by severely limiting the time speakers could speak and instituting a verification process for speakers. The truth of the matter is, that the Indiana Open Meetings law does NOT require an elected body to open the floor to citizens......it merely guarantees that the meeting be open and that citizens may "observe and record the proceedings." Mr. Bender should have read the law. No speakers, no problem....and back home in time to watch Dancing With The Stars. If one really wants to gauge the concern that bodies like City Council have for citizen input, one should watch and take note of the facial expressions and body language displayed by Council when the microphone is turned on and those ignorant taxpayers are allowed to address the supreme Council. Disinterested scowls might be a good description. So, Mr. Mitchell may be off base on some of his assertions, but make no mistake, there are many more who share his feelings, but don't have the courage to face the High and Mighty as he did.
