Wired4Truth : The Word for a Word-less Generation

Yes and no LOL. Yes - people are not monochrome and are the product of all kinds of influences and it definitely does help to know those influences, especially if they are strong ones. That said, I'm not entirely sold on the idea that one needs all that in-depth a knowledge of their audience for preaching to be meaningful to them. All men share a common need - they are fallen and in need of a Saviour - and in that sense, no matter you speak to, that emphasis (Bryan Chapell calls it the "Fallen Condition Focus" in his book Christ Centered Preaching) is the primary one. Cultural or social influences may affect how you get there, but I don't personally think they always do...

Wired4Truth : Why the Reformation Still Matters

Hey Jonah, hope all is well over in Scotland.

Interesting proposition you bring up. I think it would have happened regardless - especially when you consider men such as Wycliffe and Hus who are classified as 'pre-Reformers' and really blazed the trail for the Reformers. Further with the rise of the humanist movement and its cry of 'ad fontes' ('to the sources'), it was only a matter of time, humanly speaking', before someone noted that the sources didn't agree with the Roman Catholic system.

That's my take on it, anyway...
------------------

Funny you should mention that. I have a blog post coming up in August (scheduled to, anyways) with that coming out. It's actually fairly simple - I just wasn't taught Bible study growing up...

Absolutely. Ubuntu has a Christian Edition which comes with Bible software, presentation software and all the usual materials that comes across part of Ubuntu. Loads of churches I know personally have fallen into that and it really isn't a great witness . (By the way, you aren't Paul Taylor from AiG, are you? The email you used got me thinking along that line...)
