Getting people to identify themselves as a member of a group instead of as an individual is a cornerstone of communist totalitariamism. If they can get Americans to identify themselves as a member of an oppressed or aggrieved group, then they can win. So many times I have heard liberals shout how passionate they are about health care and education while calling me stingy for wanting lower taxes. They rarely have a reply when I explain the high volume of charity medical work and surgery I do every week at my office in addition to the time I spend volunteering at my kids' schools. Rarely do they spend any of their precious time or money putting into action what comes out of their mouths.
