World In Conversation : Why does society dislike immigrants and why are they portrayed badly?- 119 Blog

I always wondered this myself as an immigrant. Some times it feels like people are driven by hate and all they want to do is chastise something just because it is different. I always felt so ashamed for the people of America when people bring up the topic of immigration. However, I am not saying let everyone in as an immigrant myself I know that is not possible. I am saying there should be a fair and just way to allow people to immigrant and allow them to become residents and citizens because I do not feel as though people who say we should just lock down our boarders and kick everyone out because that is just idiotic. I am so dumbfounded by the stupidness, racism, and irony I see in Americans. I think the best example of this was when that law was passed in California and the business owners were not allowed to hire people who were not here legally, and then we saw the results of there stupid mistake. There economy began to fall drastically and all the business owners who were ALL republican changed sides and they wanted to repeal the act or law, so they can regain there business. Stories like that warm my heart because people really do not know what illegal Americans contribute to this country. They contribute so much to our economy and I knew this before I went step foot into Sam Richards Soc 119. I will admit that people who come to America should learn english and should try to assimilate to the current American culture and should bring there own culture across the border. However, I do not think meeting someone who speaks poor english and victimize them is not an excuse. I truly wish I had an answer to this immigration issue but sadly I do not. I know i am more on the side of immigration and that is because I know the benefits of immigrants. I know how they are better workers than you and me, I am pretty Americanized. I hate how people treat immigrants period, whether they are here legally or illegally. It is like they are below you because they speak another language and most Americans just speak one. Wouldnt you be the dumb one since you only speak one language and the immigrant your making fun of speak two. I hate how ignorant people can be. I think the American public is afraid that immigrants will do to them what they did to Native Americans so long ago. They will come into there land and kill, rape, and steal there land and treat them like they treat Native Americans back then and now. I really think they have a fear of that. I remember when Barak Obama was first running for president there was a video of this town, which was predominantly white and they felt like if he was president they would treat them badly, he would treat them like they treated anyone who looked like a minority. It is ridiculous how crazy people can be sometime. They are pretty much admitting to there racism and there faults.

World In Conversation : What are your thoughts on everything we saw and heard in lecture about Native Americans?- 119 Blog

I was so ashamed when I heard all the data you presented. The original indigenous are the poorest in this country. I am not of white descent, but I just feel ashamed of how people can treat each other. Like I would expect it would be so disproportionate. It just proves what sam has been saying. This just proves that there is an invisible force that keeps people down and it prevents people from moving up in life. All the things that has been inflected is astonishing. I just do not want to believe this is true. worst of all we do not even think of t now. This is one of the biggest tragedy in American history. I really makes you realize the cruelty that people can inflict. This just reminds me of the holocaust and how people just stood ideally by as millions of jewish people and others were massacred. When we do not speak about things how can we make it better. We do not even learn about this and that is a big problem. We spend so much money on so many stupid things like war and corporate welfare and we can not go and help the first American citizens. I just find it mind boggling. I truly felt that black people and African Americans and Middle eastern people were so terrible abused. It crazy how a whole group of people can be oppressed and abused. How they have such high suicide rates. There lives are so bad that they can not take it. It takes a lot to bring people to the point where they break down and give up. they must have given up so much in there lives. I just want to know exactly how something this tragic could happen. There is no way this is a coincident. I can not believe no one played a part when a whole race is being driven to the brink of extinction. Plus, after all the abuse there families have faced it is so likely that there women will be victims of rape and abuse. One out of three women will be raped or be a victim of sexual assault. How can people not get angry. This is so upsetting how can this just go on like it is normal. I know the starting line is not equal but we are just starting at different points and the differences are so great. For some reason it is like someone is trying to erase the fact the people that immigrated here did not rape, steal, and kill for the land that our schools, work places, and homes stand on. I remember when Sam asked if someone came and killed and stole our land and they raised there families there for generations, when is the point where you say to let it go. when do you let go?

World In Conversation : What do you think of the 29:1 statistic and what number would you pick?- 119 Blog

I think the twenty nine to one ratio in order to kill a target is astounding to think about. i always thought we should do whatever we can to protect civilians. But, then again I am not surprised. I think 29 as a acceptable lost is quiet funny. Who in particular is a acceptable lost. Does this number apply to Americans or is it just people of Iraq and Afghanistan. I mean to some people human life is expendable but I really think it is shameful that we put a price to a life. i know this is practical in a war but I can not help how I feel. However, I can see it from both sides. I wonder if there was a war at home how many people would be an acceptable lost. I have to admit I expected the number to be a lot higher. I think it should be bases on certain situation by situation. I think it should be determine depending on the threat of a particular target and the acceptable lost of lives should b determined by the number of people that are at risk of losing there lives because of this particular terrorist, insurgent, or what have you. I hate to think of the twenty nine lives because that is so heart breaking. I hate how we can take away from those people and just have them be nameless figures or numbers and there lives will go for nought. Most likely those twenty nine people have lives. They have family and friends who will have to live with their death and they will know that they were an acceptable death. I can imagine the pain they go through when they are at their loves one funeral and I can feel for them. I mean if my mom or brother fell into the twenty nine i would be so upset. I wonder how how much of American civilians America is willing to sacrifice, bt I can see at time its is for the greater good. I can also understand why they would assign a number to sacrifice for the greater good. I just hate the thought that we have it. But we are in a war and mostly innocent people are the ones that sacrifice the most and the women and children become displaced and refugees are the ones who will suffer the most. I hate how no one ever takes them into account. I wish we were a more understanding society but mist people are self centered and it is hard to figure out and get to know people who are on the other side of the world. It is hard to think things from a different point of view. If we can do that we will be able to understand each other and I think it would be harder to wage war against them.

World In Conversation : How will you be treated differently if whites become the minority?- 119 Blog

I think that white people becoming a minority during the year 2050 will not catastrophically change America because I think by that time I think a lot of corporations and major companies will most likely still be white owned. However with the shift in majority will cause changes, because I think that people who are black, asian, hispanic, women, native american, indian, middle eastern, or what have will have more opportunity. I think think we will be able to truly make things equal. I think we can get rid of things like affirmative actions and we can get rid of racism, and the racist thoughts that has been instilled in you by your family and specific situations. when i say this i do not just mean white people, i am talking about black, hispanic, asian, and etc. There is racism in minority communities as well. We can truly feel like equals. I hope that we can live in a world little girls and boys just assume that they have a chose between a black and white doll they just ask to play with because it does not matter what color it is. I hope that one day when someone ask a little black girl which one is the good and bad doll. They just say I do not know there just dolls. I was hurting when I saw that video that sam richard showed us. When white people are in the minority I hope things will change but honestly I do not think that will happen. i think people will learn to seperate themselves in some other way. i do think things like affirmative action will be around. I think it is going to be hard for white people to shift into minority status because they have been the power position for so long and people do not usually give up power willingly. I can understand that they would be uncomfortable or unwilling to accept this. I know a few white people who do not believe that would happen, and these people are not racist they are actually just all around good people but they still kinda find that uncomfortable. I am not surprised by that because most white people would be unwilling to put themselves in a situtation where they are around by a large number of minorities. i am apart of nsbe, national society of black engineers, and shpe, society of hispanic professional engineers, (i am not hispanic by the way) and I ask some of my white friends who were engineers to join but they were very unwilling to join because they would probably be in a situation like that. They said they might feel unwelcomed and then I told them to come to a shpe meeting and I will be there and I am not hispanic, but they were still unwilling to come. They would just feel uncomfortable. when I hear peolpe say why we have racial centered organization I think about this situation because it is the same thing. Most organizations are mostly white especially at penn state, so as a minority if you go to a club or org meeting your probably going to be the only person of color and you might feel uncomfortable and i realized it is the exact situation.

World In Conversation : What do you think about interracial relationships?- 119 Blog

To be honest I love seeing interracial relationships. It proving that despite the racist and evil people out there they are not affecting everyone. We are still progressing as a whole and just because of the knuckleheads, which is what Sam Richards would probably refer them as, and doing knuckle headed things. I love how interracial couples are the fastest growing racial couple. I feel as though that is great progress in a society where you could be harassed, assaulted, and be threatened with the risk of death just for looking at a white women. I think we are coming a long way from all that. When we see a interracial couple and a interracial baby it brings two different worlds in a way where you can not really classify each and separate each other. it eliminates that option and opportunity. People will not be able to separate themselves according by race or creed. we will be able to understand each other and will not feel as though we are so different than everyone else. we would not have to fear a certain race or group where we had to limit there options and opportunity whether it be subconscious and conscious. As a black man who has dated outside of there race can honestly say it is not an easy thing to do. Not only on my part but the girl as well. I do not want to appear as though I do not date black girls to but I have dated more asian girls and white girls compared to black girls. I remember one of my relationships I was dating an asian girl at the time, I did see that society was not as open to interracial couples as we would like to believe. Her parents did not want her to date a black person. they wanted her to date an asian or maybe even a black guy. I was still in high school so it was some perplexing emotions I had to bear. I kind of hated that. I was never discriminated so badly in the life. This really hurt me. No one has openly said that I can not do something because of the color of my skin. I never thought it would be a real issue but it was I had to deal with. The worst thing about I did not even really want to or did i know how too. I was not mad at my ex girlfriend or her family I was upset with society. Actually, for all of my interracial relationships except for one, my current one, race was always an issue. I just never met there parents because I really did not want to feel that awkwardness. I hated that. I did not want to acknowledge that our world and society was like that. When I met and first started going to out with my current girlfriend I really was delighted that race was not an issue for her family, in a way the kind of promoted it. she is white by the way. This kind of proved even though there ignorant people out their, there are kind and caring people too.

World In Conversation : What is your view and experience with white privilege?- 119 Blog

I think white privilege is one of the most astonishing thing I have ever heard. i have not actually heard of the term before attending Sam Richards class but growing up as a minority you kinda of see that. Like Sam said you do not start out at the same staring line growing up some will have more advantages and some people will have less advantages. I was kind of ashamed in our society when I was hearing that lecture. I did not really know how to take. It was like some one was telling me I would always be at a sort of disadvantage just because of the color of my skin and i really did not know how to take that. I was not actually angry or anything like that, I can see why some people would be because that is something that is really hard to hear. you kind of see that in society and I always thought that it could happen but i always hoped i would not just fall under that sort of statistic but when someone presents all these facts in front of your face its hard. Like wow, if I was applying for a job and a previously incarcerated white people applied for a job he would have a better chance of being hired even though I have never be committed for a crime is hard to hear. How i am more likely to be caught and incarcerated just because of what I look like. This is a sever double standard and it makes you realized that racism still exist. It shows you that there is not much equality. White privilege may seem unfair, but it goes both ways in some situations. For instance, when colleges are looking through applications in order to determine whom they would like to enroll that year in their university, they have a certain number of different race students that they accept. This could hurt the chances of a white person getting into the school they want, just because the university needs to create a more diverse population. I thinks its crazy because i always hear people talk about affirmative action and how it is so wrong and then you see these statistics and this is affirmative action working. The statistics would most likely be worst if these acts were not enacted. Think of the disadvantage there would be in this society. I would say we have improved compared to the history that we came form. Compared to the time of open bigotry and jim crows laws this is a vast improvement from that but i hope we can further this racial growth because if we want to improve society and make it as equal as we say we want it to be then we have to talk about these issues.

World In Conversation : Is it possible for affirmative action to take things too far?- 119 Blog

Yes it is possible for laws and programs such as affirmative action can be to far but i do not think it has reached that point yet. Affirmative was to level the playing field since minorities has faced harsh discrimination since the creation of this great country of ours. There was such a great disadvantage for women, black people, and other minorities and groups that faced discrimination in america in so many different areas such as education, business, and politically. Affirmative action and programs like it are set in place to everyone start at an even playing field, because we do not start at an even playing field. It is easily seen in things such as white privilege. There would not need to be affirmative action and things of the nature if there was not such a huge gap in things of that nature. There are advantages and disadvantages that comes with it. People who are minorities obviously face greater disadvantages then the majority and it is easy to see that in the society that we live in. I think more people are saying that lately because poor people who are of white descent find themselves more in the same class and situation as the black and brown people the looked down upon. They are standing in the same unemployment and welfare line as "those people. I think that more poor white americans would agree with the sentiment that affirmative action is causing a great disadvantage and causing the majority to be discriminated against and oppressed as the minorities are. I think this is so because the poor white american has associated themselves with rich white americans for so long that they feel like the best interest of the rich white american people will benefit them when reality is that it will not and that the poor white american society has more in common with the poor society that pertain to black and brown people. I just find it absolutely amazing. this can easily be seen in how poor white people will vote for policies and acts that will place them in a disadvantage just beacuse it will give people who are in the upper class of society the greater advantage and not everyone realizes this. U.S. Census Bureau projections that whites will become a minority by 2050 are fueling fears that whiteness no longer represents the norm. This fear has been compounded by the recent recession, which hit whites hard.Mass rallies in Washington, voter intimidation at the polls, creating ethnic studies programs at colleges to promote racial self-awareness -- it sounds like a script from a civil rights documentary. Yes I am sure poor white people are in the same disadvantages and as poor black and brown people but we should come together as a people so we will not need "special programs" to make things equal.

World In Conversation : Do you think in today’s society people are more racist toward Muslims or Blacks?- 119 Blog

I would definitely say that Muslims face more discriminations compared to black people. After, September eleventh it was like black and hispanic people said tag your it. Black and hispanic does face racism and discrimination but it is obvious that Muslims face more discrimination, racism, and prejudice. It is like after September eleventh blacks and hispanic joined together to discriminate against Muslims. It is so mind blowing how ironic it is. Muslims are not just mistreated by white people but also blacks and hispanic. We should feel closer with muslims since they face discriminations as well. We should all come together and come over all the racism and injustice in this country. I think it is crazy how people who have been ridiculed to ridicule other people. Muslims and anyone from middle descent face discrimination at a whole new level. Everyone who are Muslims are automatically assumed to be terrorist. It is ridiculous how people can be so ignorant. People do not realized that terrorism is the same thing as Islam. When people think of religious extreamous they automatically think of the people who will kill, murder, and sacrifice them selves for there religion. There are christian extremous that will sacrifice them self for their religion. It is so funny since killing your self and suicide are against the teaching and lessons of most religions. It is so stupid that people just make this stupid assumptions just because of what the medias shows you. They show you people in different countries fighting american troops so they are automatically the bad guys but if you look at things if people invaded your country would you not fight them off. Most people who resisted american troops they were defending there home and there culture from these foreign invaders that they did not know. If something happened and if people invaded in america you would raise arms against who ever invaded. It is no surprised what happened. When we attach people with a negative opinion. I think we should not be so ignorant but actually go and stop being racist to people because we are afraid.Even now when we know that the bombings were carried out by Osama bin Laden and a group of Muslim extremists, many Americans cannot change the terrible feelings they have toward all Muslims. Several of the Muslim students in class tried to explain that if Americans understood more about their culture and religion, they would have an easier time realizing not all Muslims hate our country and commit acts of terrorism. I agree that knowledge is necessary to help people get rid of their racist feelings, but it isn’t easy because racism is not rational. Even those Americans who do not consider themselves racist still have a fear when it comes to Muslims. The thought of terrorists blowing up buildings or planes or committing other chemical terrorist activity is a very real possibility in today’s society. It is exactly it, we are just afraid and we need to overcome that fear because we make so many stupid, moronic, and racist decisions out of fear. I think we can learn from all this and in doing so we can become a better nation.

World In Conversation : Why with more education do people believe that success is mostly a result of hard work?- 119 Blog

I know I did not get to penn state university by myself. There was so many people that helped me throughout the way to help me. I do not know where i would be with out those people the helped. It your parents, siblings, teachers, and everyone else who took time to out of there way to help me. ow ever i did work hard also. however I did work hard to get where i am today. It was the people that had faith in me to succeed. I worked extremely hard in school. I got involved and I studied hard in high school. I think it was a combination of things that allowed me to to get me where I am. I always thought this was so because so many people was here for me. I can think of countless scenarios in elementary school and middle school that we can not attribute our work to others but rather we succeed because we tried, always did our best, and practiced in order to accomplish our goals. At this point in life it does seem as though your actions do determine your success. You do all of these things keeping in mind that they will get you into a good college. College applications are based on your transcript, your list of activities and clubs, volunteer work, and short essay prompts. To get into college, you work to get good grades and ace the SAT’s. You are taught that the more involvement and more leadership positions you have, the easier it will be to get into a good college. Overall, I have come to believe, that success is more about who you know, and not about what you know. Think about it. Some of the most successful people in the world are those who know how to delegate. They know people who know how to do it and are good at putting resources together. I never really heard of the term king of the mountain before sam Richards class. I do not really understand the meaning of this though. I kind of think it means that a person bullies there way to the top and gains the most power, but I could be wrong. Coming here I also realize that not everyone had the opportunity to even go to college, let alone a great school like Penn State. In high school, I joined a program named Philadelphia Futures and with their help and their connections with different universities and colleges, I had a privilege to full scholarships to my choice of school. Of course, to stay in the program I had to work hard in high school and maintain a certain GPA and earn good grades. Filling out the application for college was a must too and writing an essay or a series of essays was mandatory. I know without the help of Philadelphia Futures and their connections I wouldn’t have received as many benefits as I would have on my own. All of these factors contributed to my getting accepted into Penn State. My parents being able to pay for my education allowed to go here. And the education I received in high school prepared me for the collegiate workload. My community college graduate counterpart could have received a poor public education, had to work a lot in high school to support his family, and maybe not been able to afford any education other than community college. Sure, I worked hard in high school to keep my grades up, but I had very few external pressures taking my attention away from my studies. I’m not sure if it is education that makes people see this reality or just growing up and getting out into the world. As a kid some people are just handed things by their parents and don’t understand that there is work involved. Or that not all people are brought up with the mentality that they can succeed. A lot of times it is about where you come from, and whether or not you can overcome your circumstances. A big reason I started understanding the determinism side of things is because of the people that I’ve met while at school. There is a variety of people here that is different than what I was used to growing up. well, no matter what happen I thinkI always want to stay in the middle

World In Conversation : Why do you think Racism continues to be a problem throughout the world?- 119 Blog

There is so many ways to answer this questions. I think there is still racism because we choose to separate ourselves from one another, and then we call each other something else. It is as though we do not share 99.99 percent of the dna. we might think we are better than someone else. we can just have a bad experience with someone of a particular race and then they would assume that everyone is like. I think it is all due to the fact that we can not look pass our stereotypes and ignorance.I wish we could change this give everyone an opportunity to interact with people who are different from them in ways such as race, gender, and nationality. I think as human beings we all try to feel and prove that we are better than everyone else in some shape or way. I think we need to just relax and except the fact that we are all the same no matter what your race is, whether it be black, white, Latino or Latina, native american, middle eastern, arab, or southeastern asian .I think at a young age kids are expose to racism and stereotypes from television, news, their friends, their parents, and any form of media. when you expose people to so much biases, prejudice, and racism how do you expect them to react. Racism and inequality reached a point where we have to force people to treat each kindly by giving them laws to obey. I think there is definitely a problem when we have to go to these measures and extremes. There is so much racism out in the world and its not even in america. I think its so messed up how people will decide that they will hate another person based on where they were born or who their parents are. This is something they have no control over and we decide to hate them, treat them lesser than us, and treat them like they are beneath us. I truly believe that we live in a messed up society. It is funny because america kind of brings people to through hatred and racism. That way they can get together and hate and be prejudice to other groups of people. Like i know people who are Vietnamese who hang out with people who are cambodian and these two countries do not like each at all. If they were in their country of origin they would probably be prejudice to each other. but when your in america you do not seem so different because there are so man other people that seem even more different like black, white, and hispanic people. However, I do feel people are becoming less prejudice with each other since their are more interactions among people of different races.

World In Conversation : Interpreting Names for People of One Race Who Act like Another- 119 Blog

I wished we could live in a world where race was not an issue. I just wished we could treat each other equally and not judge someone who you do not even know. I think it is a big problem for america and the rest of the world. I do not really feel like its as if you were a black person who interacts with a lot of white people they will start acting white or if it was the oppose it, if a white person who hangs out with a lot of black people they will start acting white. I know their are people who are in the same position and they do not conform to acting like another race if you beleive that you can act like someone of a certain race. However, there are people who do that but you can not just assume that they are acting like that is the norm but maybe thats just their personality. Maybe if we stopped refering people as twinkie or oreo the world would be a better place and not a place of racism and prejudice. Maybe we would be able to understand each other more.

Its as if you want to be well educated and intelligent you have to be white. I think this is really messed up. Its like that even to people of their own race. It is like someone has put everyone in a box and they even have people beleiving that they should want to learn as if they can not acheive something better with their life. I just wished people were more educated about people of other races.

I think it is messed up on how people do that. How they would call someone a twenkie or an oreo. You can not really classify someone by there actions or behavior because people are not like that. You can not generalize people like that. You should not judge some one because of their race. I am not a stranger to this action. Like just because I am black I have to act a certain way or do certain things. I can not act or behave anoher way or I will not be classified as my own race but another one. I wish we did not do this. Its like if your black their is a certain way your suppose to behave or act a certain way. Like I am suppose to be a gangster or something. If your asian your suppose to watch anime or something like that. I hate how racist people are. Its like if a black person likes reading and enjoys being in school their classified as white or their acting like a white person. They act like a white person like learning and going to school.

World In Conversation : What The Most Beautiful Race Means to You- 119 Blog

There no such thing as the most beautiful. I see people who are hang out with people who are the same race as them but I do often see people who hang out with people with people that are a different race and ethnicity. I will admit that I do see more of the people who hang out with there same race but you can not just make the assumption that everyone only hang out with the people that are the same race as them. I do have black friends but they are not the only group of people that I hang out with. I know people who are apart of the Penn State Filipino Association that are not Filipino. Some of them are not even asian, some of them are white, black, and hispanic. Most people are very closed off and narrow minded. They think other people are mean or hurtful for some reason. I think everyone should lighten up and be open to meeting new people. we should all hang out with people who are a different race than themselves. It would the world a better place. Though, I can see why people would only hang out with their own race. Some people are not used to being around people who are a different race then them. So, they may feel some sort of security when they become friends with people with their race. They could be shy and they could just be used to a certain type of person. Like they may think, hey you look like me maybe we could be friends because most of my friends in the past looks like me. I do not blame people who hang out with people who are different from them. Also, I do not think that it affects the people you date. well, for me it does not. I have gone out with girls that are not the same race as me. I have dated girls who are asian, black, and white. I do not think race should matter when it comes to race. But, race does matter to some people. I have met girls who only dated black or white men. I always thought this was weird. But, hey everyone is different. I just wished race was not this big issue sometime. It makes understanding each other much easier. I really do not think there can be the most beautiful race. I have seen beautiful girls who are black, asian, white, and hispanic. But I have also seen unattractive girls who are white, black, asian, and hispanic. i do not think we can just make a rash assumption like that. I just hope after this class we can all grow up.

World In Conversation : Last Name “J” – Intense Debate

Why do we still have stereotypes? To be honest I do not know how to respond to this question. We all know stereotypes are wrong but we still use them and that is very upsetting. It is not only in the white community but it is among every race. if you were to hang out with a group of a certain race you can see that they have stereotypes with people with other races. Such as Asians can not drive, Hispanics are just house maids, Caucasians are hicks and inbreed, and African Americans or black people like to eat chickens. We are so used to hearing this that it has become the norm. If we hear these comments we would laugh as though it is trivial but the fact of the matter is some people believe them. This really annoys me. I even see this among a particular race making stereotypical remarks about their own race. I am extremely dumbfounded by this. It feels like everyone has been hearing these racial remarks for so long that they start to buy into them. I think this strengthens racism and prejudiced. If your someone who has never frequently been around people of a different race all you know are these stereotype. I think people should expose themselves to people who are different than you in race and country. I know if we did this we can build understanding and appreciation among our differences. I am a black man and I have met people who assume I am uneducated or a criminal just because of the color of my skin. This is very upsetting. How can you just try to make an assumption about a person you have never met. You would never want to someone doing that to you why would you do that to someone else. I think we should assume the best of others. I think people enjoy the feeling of dominance that they create these assumption so they can feel better about them selves. Sometimes I think the only way we can eradicate racism and prejudiced is to erase everyones history to start from scratch. Stop organizing with people that are the same color as yourself. That way we would not demean other people by just the way they look like. I know were going to meet people who are mean, hurtful, deceitful, cruel, untrustworthy, and just a douche bag. We should not just assume that they have these characteristics because of how they look like but we should assume these things because we have met this particular person and from being with them we figured out that they have those characteristics. If we just took the time to actually just get to know someone instead of just making radical stereotypes about them wouldn't that make the world a better place.
