Forecasting temperature trends over a few months is definitely a science involving probabilities. What is like going to the casino and playing the slots is forecasting snow for the Willamette Valley as a one or two degree temperature difference can be the difference between wet pavement and 25 inches of snow - thus the real difficulty of ever predicting a major snow event for the valley regardless of whether it is an El Nino or El Nina year. I love it because it comes down to whatever it is currently doing outside becomes the forecast. It requires only personal observation and no sophisticated home weather station except for maybe an outdoor thermometer and Christmas barometer and perhaps a report from the Columbia River Light Ship which was the main source of data in the Pacific before satellites .
