Dunetz should go after Kissinger next. He often said much the same thing when he was NSA and Secretary of State.

I wouldn't make a habit of using this argument - sounds a little too much like La Raza's re: the US Southwest. Only their claim is a lot more recent.

The balance of the game has shifted heavily to passing in the past decade. Look at the career passer rating list again - how many active players are in the top twenty-five? 14. How many hall of famers? Just 3.

You know, there are very good reasons why no sane US administration would seriously consider a mutual defense treaty with Israel. Maybe you could think about what those reasons might be and get back to us.

Tell me, were there people back in your day (fifty years ago) both behaving as if they were on the cutting edge of current political thought and also prattling on about how relevant the 1910's were to that thought? And if there were, did you listen to them or think they were hopelessly out of date?

Big Peace : National Guard Officer Joins Joint Chiefs of Staff: Move Puzzles Existing Members

Agreed. Some of the services have been shamelessly using the Guard and Reserves to fill out easily predictable gaps in their force structures since the 90s. At one point I had been activated four times in less than eight years - every time for not less than 270 days. Hard to maintain any sort of normal career when they call you up for every minor deployment.

But what would have been the justification, to protect Polish neutrality? Congress would have never voted for war pre-Pearl Harbor and FDR was almost powerless to act without them. The pitiful 1939 US Army would not have been much of an immediate challenge to Germany anyway.

Big Journalism : Obama Falsely Claims Audience Booed Gay Soldier at Fundraiser

Active duty soldiers should shut up and do their jobs - not openly complain about their leadership (Gen McChrystal, many military bloggers, etc) or ask questions during debates. If you want to get involved in politics beyond voting leave the military and run for Congress. I guess I'm old-fashioned.

Big Hollywood : Today's Open Thread: #19 'The Wild, Wild West

Napoleon was outnumbered almost 2-1 at Waterloo (or did you forget about the Prussians?) The French were also on the offensive and in enemy territory - all in all , hardly an equal chance to win. Lee lost twice to mediocre generals at Antietem and Gettysburg under similar circumstances. I might also point out that a major reason why the Confederacy "no longer had a viable chance to win" by the time Grant came East was because of what Grant had already done in the West.
